Very different to compare managers and maybe even impossible now days given that some have free reign and some have restrictions to most things they do (Hello Spurs). Different levels also apply needs, although it turned out to be a Horrific period at Crewe, Dario Grady's achievements purely on the football side were pretty astonishing, Ray Graydon at Wallsall. People will always throw up the big names but Ferguson came within a hairs breath of the sack early on and had an astonishing scouting set up and training staff and a golden generation coming through at the same time. He sensible got out when he saw the squad was finished to retain his legacy and I like him as a man. but seriously doubt he could have competed with some great long term lower League managers who do everthing but was the kits (and some have even had their wives do that in the past)

Francis didn't come to Forest till 1979. Before that Clough and Taylor with old stager Peter Withe and teenager Tony Woodcock up front got promoted from Div 2, won Division 1, the League Cup and the Simod Cup, also knocked Liverpool out of the European Cup. Francis was the next piece in the jigsaw to compete in Europe. If Forest hadn't won the League title in 78, the money for Francis wouldn't have been available.

Ferguson's honeymoon period was 3 years! There is no way any manager would get away with that now. To be fair to him, he was responsible for the youth and scouting system's. The film goes into this. Again, it was based on the layered system that Stein brought in in the late 60's. In some ways it was almost seamless. The Utd support were starved of success so they would argue it was worth the wait.

Hmmm. Not convinced. Story from 2019 which didn't develop much traction.
