Anyone into them? I like the odd song but don't own any of their records.
I've just heard a song from their first LP Garlands and upon reading up about this album discovered it's unlike their later stuff and more in the vein of early PIL, early Banshees, early Cure and Joy Division.

Like you Stu - the odd song here and there is quite enough for me

For me, the first two albums are mandatory - some classic songs beyond that too. Beautiful ethereal music at it's best...

I enjoy their music but I’ve never sat and listened to an entire album or anything like that

Acquired the Head Over Heels album recently, absolutely splendid stuff.
This is a later song, absolutely brilliant .

Clever and worthy and all that but profoundly dull to my ear

It's probably time I gave them a proper listen
Peel was always playing them

There was a time when you couldn't turn on John Peel without a Cocteau Twins track popping up
I was never that keen on them but I'm now wondering if the time is right for a re-evalutation?
What about you punk?

Just listened to Heaven in its entireity...
The Cocteau Twins - Heaven or Las Vegas (1990)
There was a time when you couldn't turn on John Peel without a Cocteau Twins track popping up and that was fine by me. Nice to hear the odd song but for all their acclaim it was still quite dull
The two I heard most were Song to the Siren (only just realised this was not actually Cocteaus) and Pearly Dew Drops. As avid readers of the music press we all remember that in the early 80s the critics couldn’t get enough of their ethereal, effects laden sound and Liz Fraser’s unintelligible soprano vocals. In modern terms you’d label them Dream Pop, and in hindsight they were the original pioneers. Their sound has proved influential
Listening in 2022 it’s very obvious why they never grabbed me at the time despite being undeniably lovely. If I was prepared to put in the listening, I could probably develop a degree of affection however Liz Fraser’s vocals annoy me, especially across an album. It’s still the case that an odd track here makes a refreshing change but back-to-back Liz soon makes me want to change the sound
When I try to image these tunes as instrumentals, or with a different voice, I conclude I’d enjoy them more. Doubtless sacrilege to yer average hardcore Cocteaus fan but there we are
Listening to this album in one sitting was a struggle but that’s the sacrifices we all have to make
Rationally I get the appeal and the acclaim however emotionally it’s a thanks but no thanks
4/10
