Playing the Palais, how was that? A bit daunting at the time. It was the biggest venue I'd played. Astbury out of the Cult was backstage (his old bandmates from Southern Death Cult were in the group). He sensed I was nervous and he gave me a bit of a pep talk before we went on, which was classy of him

Anyone go to the Moonlight and / or the Rainbow?
I know Joy Division and other Peel type bands played there, doesn't seem to have lasted long.

Went to both on quite a few occasions The Rainbow was a few stops on the Underground from where I lived so went there a lot and had some great nights there. A really great medium sized venue. Another old cinema I think - now an evangelical church. The George Robey pub, another famous venue, was over the road. The Moonlight was a bit inaccessible for me but always a great place for gigs. Quite small so an intimate space to see bands. Saw Theatre of Hate there the most.

It sure helped my nerves, and I got through the show ok. He was a bit of an idol of mine (one reason why I joined his old group), so his encouragement meant a lot.

Often in unlikely spots like multi-storey car parks. A forerunner to the rave scene. Flat top, ripped jeans and those black bomber jackets that I can't remember the name of (MA-1?)

Great little film Stu77. Hacienda was a bit overrated in my book but Hooks book about it is a fascinating insight into how not to run a club.

Like Lord Emsworth, I saw Theatre of Hate at the Moonlight. Pretty sure I saw Crass there too. Saw Public Image at the Rainbow in 78. Fave venue would probably be The Music Machine (which later became the Camden Palace) - it had so many great bands playing every week. Best gig ever (for me) would have been The Clash with Suicide and The Specials as support. Suicide blew me away TBH, they were intense. Honourable mention to Loppen in Copenhagen, a really nice intimate venue I used to love going to. Saw quite a few bands there in the 90s: The Amps (Kim Deal's side band around the time of The Breeders), Cibu Matto and a heap of others I honestly can't remember.

The Music Machine was wonderful - a classic venue Sadly all changed when it became the Camden Palace Only been to Copenhagen to watch football on flying visits but absolutely fell in love with the place - would love to go back for a longer visit

If I did it would have been in the early 80's to see either Conflict or Subhumams. Don't really remember much about it, apart from a skinhead at the bar with a DM boot tattooed on his cheek. I went to The Rainbow once, aged 16, early on in my gig-going career, Nov '81, for the Woodstock Revisted Festival. It was awful, which this review from Sounds sums up perfectly: standupandspit.wordpress.com/2016/04/04/woodstock-revisited/ I remember being down the front when Splodge came on. I was grabbed by a skinhead and treated like a rag doll as he and his mates went steaming into the punks. When released I made my way to the back and spent the rest of the gig with my mates in the circle. We didn't stay till the end. I also remember security going down the front with dogs to control the violence, and remaining there throughout the evening.

Did anyone here go to: The Vortex Brixton Fridge Dingwalls Hammersmith Palais Wag Club Speakeasy The only London venues I ever went to were Brixton Academy, Wembley Arena and Earls Court which as mentioned was a bit rubbish. I saw Death in June at Brixton Fridge. There is footage online from a performance of theirs in '82 but I think the one I saw was '84. The Lyceum was a regular venue for me and my mates early 80's, especially on a Sunday. It was a direct line for us into Waterloo, taking about an hour. The last train ( without having to change ) was around 11.30pm I think. I used to then ring my dad from the station ( without putting money in ) and he'd come and pick me up. Looking back on it now I take my hat off to my father for putting himself out for me. The Palais seemed to then replace the Lyceum in terms of excellent gigs. By this time I had a car so would drive up and park in the side streets. I can't recall going to any of the other venues listed above, but wouldn't be surprised to discover I did. In the mid to late 80's I moved to Bristol which had some great places - the Tropic Club, the Thekla, the Studio for bigger bands.
