Flipping heck, Pete Doherty's piled on the pounds
Is it wrong to be shocked?

Might be on antidepressants some of them make you ravenously hungry. Good point. Or maybe just come off heroin?

I remember that now. It was an interview in the Guardian I think and he had some kind of gut buster breakfast in Margate where he lives That's an insane quantity of high calorie and unhealthy grub for one sitting Even got the bread and butter on the side

I don't know much of their music but what I have heard I thought was rubbish.

I quite liked them. Mick Jones produced their debut album which was their best.
After bursting onto the scene through guerilla gigs including on underground trains etc., and NME patronage, the tabloids started reporting on Pete Doherty who was of interest as he was dating Kate Moss and seemed to be regularly getting busted by the feds for possession of heroin.
His subsequent/parallel band Babyshambles were a more shambolic version of the Libs and had the odd moment. Personal fave of theirs is Fuck Forever.
He has a new band now and I heard one of their recent albums which was pretty good. He never really changes and is doing nothing new but can definitely pen a tune and a lyric from time to time.
Inessential but enjoyable enough

For me a lot of these Indie/Britpop bands are good for the odd song or two but I can’t be doing listening to full albums of it.Just doesn’t move me like punk.

I thought "Down In Albion" had it's moment's and I recall liking Carl Barat's "Dirty Pretty Things" too. They never got past the two H's though, heroin and hype.

Currently reading... Surprisingly enjoyable Fair to say he loved his crack and smack and, so far, has no desire to get clean despite prison sentences and some brushes with death

Currently reading... Surprisingly enjoyable Fair to say he loved his crack and smack and, so far, has no desire to get clean despite prison sentences and some brushes with death I picked this up in an Audible sale. I quite like Pete's music but am not a full on fan. Much of his life has been one long soap opera. I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. I love music biographies but was not expecting Pete to be so forthright and open. This is no "my drugs hell" memoir. What's striking is just how enthusiastic for getting totally out of it he remained for many years. He's very casual about habitually smoking crack, taking heroin, injecting ketamine etc. He approached stints in rehab as an obligation he did for other people (the justice system, bandmates and so on) and regarded himself as a fully functioning addict. This despite a trail of death, squandered money, a kid he barely saw, unreliability, prison sentences and so on. Total carnage. He's unapologetic about most of this stuff and very matter of fact. Certainly a life lived on his own terms. I've not quite finished so will add further thoughts if anything occurs to me after I finish
