I honestly thought he'd gone already. Tutti Frutti which kick started his career is a great musical urban legend.
Not getting a series of songs right in the studio, Richard and the band decamped to a bar. In the corner was a piano and he started banging out the bordello tune Tutti Frutti with their original obscene lyrics about homosexual intercourse. His manager got Dolly La Bostrie to alter the words and the rest is history.
A Wop Bam Boom indeed.

Little Richard is name-checked in The Clash's 'Gates of the West'. Maybe someone they met in New York, not the real one

I saw Richard open for Chuck Berry at Caesar's in Vegas back in the 90's They were both getting on but they could still play. James Brown and his entourage joined the audience to a standing ovation and occupied the tables opposite mine just as Richard finished his set with 'Tutti Frutti'.
