Picked up a dozen Northern singles today, mostly reissues or reboots. But this has got me scratching my head, Tamla offshoot Soul label demo. Looks a bit too new to be the real deal but got an expert coming to look at it Saturday. Never had an official single release apparently, classic all the same.

January usually quiet in the shop, so I've taken a few days off and had a mooch round the small Yorkshire villages and towns. Found this for a quid in a bric and brac store in the middle of nowhere. No idea what it was at first but I always take a punt on the obscure, sometimes it ends up in the bin and sometimes..... well. Played it, nothing special Northern Soul. Researched it value wise and did a double take, can't be original surely, must be repress, though the label and playing surface were showing a lot of use. Had to get a friend in who knows his Northern. He said original no doubt. Only one for sale Discogs UK, £1900.
WI'll anyone pay that sort of money for piece of 7 inch plastic? I'm going to keep it safe for a bit before making a decision.

Great tune. Added it to my enormous NS digital collection. Incredible how many gems there are lurking out there. In idle moments I continue working through this list to unearth more gems... www.soulfulrecords.co.uk/top%20500I notice Eula is at number 210 She made an album too... eccentricsoul.bandcamp.com/album/let-our-love-grow-higherEula Cooper's complete Tragar, Note, and Super Sound recordings. Produced by Atlanta record mogul Jesse Jones between 1968-1972, Let Our Love Grow Higher chronicles the development of this gifted, black soprano from high school freshman to womanhood over twelve slices of sultry southern soul. Recorded at the finest studios in the south, including Muscle Shoals and Fame, Jones spared no expense capturing Cooper’s unique and lilting delivery, even if the resulting 45s languished in Atlantan exile.

I like that Harvey tune, always try to have a repro copy in stock, yet you get a few saying it's a 'floor emptier' and not Northern at all. They're a strange lot those Soulies.

Classic slice of blue eyed soul from John Drevars Expression. Straight outta Southampton triv fans The single didn't chart but found a second lease of life at Wigan Casino and it's a belter... John Drevars Expression - The Closer She Gets (1968)UK Blue eyed soul of the highest order from Southampton's John Drevars Expression ,a soul orientated band in the vein of Amen Corner. Released on UK MGM in the Spring of 1968 and remarkably failed to chart ,but some 7 years later would set dancefloor alight at the Wigan Casino. A prefect example of cross over pop Northern and certainly no change from £100 if you are lucky enough to find a copy. HistoryJohn Drevar’s Expression originated from Southampton. John Drevar was originally in a band called The Planets with Beau Dinnage and David St. John (Dinnage and St. John moved into The Unforgiven). Drevar departed in 1965 to from The Expression. Group members were recruited from various other Southampton acts such as the Earth Angels and The Chris Shakespeare Movement. All of these named acts were handled by local entrepreneur and disc jockey, Dave Jay. Melvyn McRae and Derek Edmond had joined from the Earth Angels with Richie Hayes leaving the Chris Shakespeare Movement to join JDE. As well as there being continuous live work both at home and abroad, the newly-formed John Drevar’s Expression were signed up and recording their debut single for MGM records (UK division). In 1967, MGM issued The Closer She Gets b/w When I Come Home. Although the single didn’t sell sufficiently, the band were performing alongside people such as Jimi Hendrix at the Paris Olympia and the Playboy Club in London. They also played at the world premiere of the film, Thoroughly Modern Millie. By 1968, the band had decided to split with The Expression leaving to follow a more preferred progressive style. The band re-named themselves as Inflatable Toy (see entry). John Drevar returned to join Chris Shakespeare in The Globe Show who were then signed to Page One records. Members John Drevar - aka Drever (vocals), Melvyn McRae (guitar), Colin Willsher (bass guitar), Geoff Vaughan, Richie Hayes (keyboard), Derek Edmond (drums), Barry Palmer, Keith Bennett (sax). www.britishmusicarchive.com/artists/john-drevars-expression/
