I had a song on my mp3 player that I heard on a Northern Soul show on local radio (hosted by the guy who suggested to Joy Division that they use the riff in NF Porter's Keep On Keepin' On for Interzone) but now I can't find the song and can't remember what it was bloody called. It was a sad ballad sung by a man. How obscure is it Stu? Can you remember any lyrics? Can't remember. I see that there are tracklists from all the shows on the BBC website I'll need to have a look at those.

The tunes that came to mind was Long After Tonight Is Over as it's slow and often got played at the end of a long night at the Twisted Wheel etc - maybe too obvious?
Back to the tuneage...
Here's Chris Clark who was a six foot platinum blonde soul singer who was one of the few white artists signed to Motown Records.
She achieved little commercial success but a number of her mid 1960s songs, including this one, were picked up on the Northern Soul scene and belatedly recognised as classics.
I Want To Go Back There Again is a beaut....

Long After Tonight Is All Over, Jimmy Radcliffe, I'm On My Way, Dean Parrish were some of the last records played at the final night of Wigan Casino. They are compiled on a wonderful three track EP. The other being the very last tune before the doors closed forever. Exquisite.

I've found it Reminds me a bit of Taurus by Spirit, the song Led Zeppelin plagarised for Stairway To Heaven.

I'm fairly damn old but I have never been able to really work out what qualifies something as "Northern Soul", all seems rather arbitrary to me.

I like it
Definite Stairway To Heaven vibe in that one
I've never knowingly heard it before - not sure I'd have pegged it as Northern Soul though
Talking of which....

I'm fairly damn old but I have never been able to really work out what qualifies something as "Northern Soul", all seems rather arbitrary to me. Main criteria seems to be that it wasn't a hit and wasn't on Motown I'm far from an expert but it's fair to say there was a certain snobbishness to the scene and a lot of secrecy with DJs keen to protect the titles/artits of their top tunes
I know there was a schism between Wigan Casino and Blackpool Mecca in the early 70s with Ian Levine at the Mecca embracing more contemporary funk and disco including stuff on Philadelphia.
That said the Wigan Casino also used to be criticised for being too broad brush. Getting back to Doug's question - and based on my understanding - in the early 70s it was all about finding records that were the correct tempo. That's why, for example, The Night by Frankie Valli, despite being more of a disco song, was a big hit on the Northern Soul scene.
More poppy stuff like Band of Gold and Give Me Just A Little More Time were also big records at the time though I doubt too many of today's NS DJ's play them
Frankie Valli - The Night
Freda Payne - Band of Gold (1970)
The Chairman of the Board - Give Me Just A Little More Time (1970)

The exclusiveness was part of the appeal for the punx who as I recall were more kindly disposed towards NS than mainstream disco, which we loathed

A few Northern Soul fans I knew came into the punk scene for a bit. I think they liked the chaos and energy of the gigs rather than the actual recorded music.

Those three may be well be my all time favourites of the genre - along with Do I Love You (Indeed I Do) and Dobie Gray's Out On The Floor
