Been playing them quite a bit recently
I loved the first couple of albums and can find plenty to enjoy in most of their albums
What's yer verdict?
And how about this early classic...?

Now you're talking LE. An American girl I worked with turned me onto them mid eighties and I bought everything that moved. Their sound changed when drummer Billy Berry retired due to an anyeursm and they lost that harmony vocal sound which underpinned a lot of their work. The backing of Mike Mills and Berry exemplified here on one of my favourites.

Like everything up to Out Of Time. I hated AFTP and didn't bother after that though I thought Leaving New York was a great single.

I liked everything they did up until Automatic For the People which I find to be very overrated and uninteresting. Apart from Drive. Though this, one of the last things they ever did is possibly my favourite single of everything they ever did.
A few more favourites

The only one I really like is AFTP!
I think they reached a certainly maturity with that but I always thought they were a bit hit and miss anyway🤔

In the 80s, i guess R.E.M. were one of the four most highly influential American 'Alt-Rock' bands of that decade... the other 3 perhaps being The Pixies, HÅ«sker DÅ« and The Replacements.
Not sure if i have mentioned it on here already... but on my first trip to America in 1994, i was in Athens G.A. for a week, to meet up with David Barbe, who by then had joined the band Sugar. A friend of David's (Dewitt) was letting me crashout on his sofa. One afternoon Dewitt took me on an R.E.M. tour of the town, showing me their rather beautiful Wooden Manor houses and a peep inside the huge warehouse where they kept all their guitars, amps, drums etc.
Members of R.E.M. were often to be seen in town. I remember seeing Michael Stipe in a bar with some friends. Courtney Love was visiting him at the time.

How did that happen? I really loved his Mud Sharks novel of a few years back. He's also probably my favourite drummer of all time. That Athens trip sounds wonderful. Talk about being in the right place at the right time

...you are getting the drummer Dave Barbarossa, muddled with Atlanta born bass player David Barbe, young Nigel. I got to know David Barbe from being a fan of his Athens based power trio band MERCYLAND. After they split up, he fronted a band called Buzz Hungry... and then joined Sugar... i got to meet him for the first time in London, when Sugar first toured the UK David Barbe has worked in recording studios in Athens for the last 25 years
