According to the investigative journalist Larry O'Hara, Ray Hill along with Tim Hepple was a state agent using his position within Searchlight as a listening post on the British Left and anti fascists in general.
This was a big story 30 years ago when the BNP were at their most active on the streets but now...it's old hat.

I've read that book very interesting.
This is the accompanying documentary. Searchlight released Hepple's side of the story in a publication called At War With Society.

In my opinion Larry O'Hara had both Hepple and Hill bang to rights.
And he proved it in 'At War with the Truth'
Searchlight were extremely dodgy and accused people of being fascists when they quite clearly weren't.
The anarchist group Class War being one who were exonerated by AFA.
Republicans in Ireland, quite naturally gave them a wide berth due to the fact that they were experts in counter intelligence and surveillance especially when it came to MI5's role in Ireland which was basically the RUC's Special Branch.
All ancient history now though.

I've read both.Larry O'Hara's reply was 'At War with the Truth' as I previously mentioned. He takes Hepple's account apart and proves he was a state asset. As an active anti fascist at the time, the dogs on the street knew what Searchlight were all about. Disinformation amongst the left especially the more 'active militants.

I've never read Larry O'Hara's booklet I must get it.
It's pretty obvious Searchlight has deep state connections. Hope Not Hate nearly got prosecuted when they had a mole in National Action but they've probably got state connections too.

I found both of them in a box only a few weeks ago. Might re-read them. Searchlight had a working relationship with AFA In the early days but due to Red Action's links to Republicans, it was all pretty tenuous. Anarchists never trusted Gable due to his ' the State must catch and prosecute the fascists' approach. O'Hara was the real expert however as most of the groups involved with AFA kept their own council as a matter of security.

The grubby quagmire of far right politics is an endless source of fascination to me... will have to check that book out.
Hill comes across as a shady character though...

He most certainly was and I won't mourn him. However, that book is a one sided opinion and most anti fascists would see it as semi fictional. You could read that and then read Larry O'Hara's journalism for a more rounded view of Hill and indeed Hepple.
