...and they would have gotten away with it if it wasn't for that meddling ECHR Just like the Rwanda deportation flight, then! Every little bit helps.

It would be interesting to see how the financial case would hold up now, presumably it would actually be better for Scotland than it was back then due to the current relevance of North Sea gas. Still don't think there's enough appetite there for the potential risk though. Scotland is an interesting case study: its population has developed an appetite for left-wing politics as they're receiving all the benefits (high public spending) without having to pick up the bill (due to the Barnett Formula). I suspect if Scotland does go independent and its population has to pick up the bill for the SNP's largesse, its voting will shift significantly to the right. I also predict that the SNP will run an offshore-style economy – their political role models are Ireland and the Isle of Man. There is nothing wrong with "high public spending" if the money is there, the current Conservative government who you no doubt voted for have wasted more than enough money on dodgy deals with their chums and through incompetence for at least a basic sustainable level of public services. Wasting billions by creating an utterly incompetent track and trace system run by Conservative wife Dido Harding who had zero public health experience and had failed upwards since her time in the mobile phone business is one that springs to mind.

Of course you wouldn't get English racists running amok abroad A fair point Rogue That was nearly 30 years ago and, crucially, is not a feature of any home games Contrast that with what we have seen time and time again in the Puskás Arena from the home fans in the last few years - it's chalk and cheese That would be like blaming Scottish fans now for those morons who tore up Wembley and ran amok many years ago.

Just the tip of the iceberg Doug. Their mismanagement is extrordinary. And now we're the only major economy (apart from Russia) with no growth. In fact the only part of the UK that is booming is... ...Northern Ireland - the only place that doesn't have trade barriers. Who could have foreseen that? Exports down by 20%. No sign of those sunny uplands yet. Or the £350 million for the NHS. Lying incompetents. Surely even the most dyed in the wool Tory must acknowledge this bunch have not a got a clue and are trashing our international reputation along with our economy.

There is nothing wrong with "high public spending" if the money is there. Agreed. The point I was making is that everybody loves high public spending when they don't have to pay for it via increased taxes. That will be a difficult circle for the SNP to square if Scotland goes independent.

Barnett Formula Courtesy of Labour. The Scots ceased to be of practical use to the union when they stopped sending Labour MPs to Westminster. If they want to bite the hand that feeds them, they can **** the hell off and pay for their own Braveheart utopia, the sooner the better.

I don't think people mind paying, it's the astonishing levels of Conservative wastage and corruption that makes it seem as if the country has no money to pay for basic levels of services.

I have noticed more and more on line, the complaint that everyone is allowed to vote to leave England or argue for that right, but England doesn't get the right to leave them. I still think we are better off as a "union" even if some parts are less productive than others.

Now that the Scots have chosen petty nationalism over class solidarity they are as much use to British working people as a chocolate teapot. Godspeed, I say.

Assumes that those voting SNP want to leave the Union, there are many other reasons for voting SNP, I would too were I up there. If they have a vote and lose, they will just continue being the best left of centre option I would guess, they won't suddenly disband, although they may need to change their name.

Is the Scottish nationalism that petty? Let's face it they don't vote Tory but invariably get a Tory Govt foisted on them. Plus they didn't want to leave the EU but were forced out.
I wish I was still in Scotland, I'd gradually wave goodbye to the rest of the UK. We're an embarrassment to ourselves and the rest of the world at the moment

Is the Scottish nationalism that petty? All nationalism is petty. You think? Indian nationalism whilst under British colonial rule? (See also numerous other similar examples)

All nationalism is petty. You think? Indian nationalism whilst under British colonial rule? Nationalism can sometimes have value when it provides the motivation for the struggle against imperialism, but the struggle against imperialism would have more value if it were motivated by internationalism, IMO.
