Used to enjoy going to see Jean-Luc Godard's work down at the Electric Cinema with my arty girlfriend back in the day Breathless (French: À bout de souffle) is a classic == Also loved One Plus One aka Sympathy for the Devil, the Stones film Jean-Luc Godard, who has died aged 91, was one of the most influential directors in the history of cinema. The French-Swiss filmmaker found fame in the late 1950s as one of the leading figures in the French movement known as the New Wave, going on to direct dozens of films in a career lasting more than half a century

Sympathy was an odd but compelling piece of work. One of the last documented footage of Brian Jones deterioration. The looks that Richards and Jagger give each other as Jones lays comatose in a recording booth signifies his time with the band is over.

Wasn't he a bit of a bully who treated his two wives badly?

Wasn't he a bit of a bully who treated his two wives badly? See that list in the link above At number eight... 8. He could be a 'shit' Not unjustifiably Godard has the reputation of being difficult both personally and professionally. His two marriages, first to Anna Karina and then to Anne Wiazemsky, were stormy, something that spilt out into his films. Angered by producer Iain Quarrier's recut of his 1968 Rolling Stones documentary Sympathy for the Devil, Godard punched him in the face when it was shown in London.

The Richard Gere remake of A Bout de Souffle called Breathless is worth seeing and makes an interesting companion piece to the original
Both films still really stand up - not something I'd say about all JLG's films, many of which are groundbreaking but a bit boring too
