As anyone who reads The Guardian or the Independent will be aware, Greta Thunberg has made a "small penis" quip on Twitter after being trolled by the now discredited and arrested Andrew Tate. According to left-wing journalists like Rebecca Solnit and Rhea Freeman, Thunberg is now one of the greatest comedians of all time. As per Solent, her joke was "one of the greatest tweets in history" and Freeman, even more bizarrely, reckons it was "a masterclass in dignity". www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2022/dec/31/greta-thunberg-andrew-tate-tweetwww.independent.co.uk/voices/greta-thunberg-andrew-tate-twitter-pizza-box-advice-b2253465.htmlThese are by no means the only articles these two papers have printed lauding Thunberg for her Rabelaisian wit. Is it just me, or is this inane level of hero-worship simply embarrassing? It makes me dislike Thunberg strongly, and it's not even her fault that her admirers react like this. For sure, she's created a lot of publicity for a cause she passionately believes in, which I find admirable, but by no stretch of the imagination is she a comedian (even though she's incredibly adept at manipulating the media and raising her own profile). Of course, she'd have got the same reaction from her unquestioningly loyal acolytes no matter what she'd said: if she'd cracked the "my dog's got no nose" joke, it would still have been lauded as one of the funniest utterances ever made.

Was a fairly weak response but it sent Mr. Tate’s head west which makes the response appear a lot funnier

She does good work and more to highlight the climate emergency than most politicians & community leaders
She's a hero

She's a smart young lady who is helping spread a good message and having fun doing it. The thing that is utterly beyond me is the hatred I see aimed at her, Is it because those of the hard right see climate change as some evil cooked up plot between "lefties" and crooked scientists all after funding? (that seems the American right view/conspiracy) Then you get the casual misogyny of saying the's not clever enough to have these thoughts herself and her parents have somehow brainwashed her into being a mouthpiece for others (George Soros usually gets included somewhere) So many grown men seem to spend an inordinate amount of time on line trying to belittle a young woman who's actually got off her arse and is trying to make the world a better place. Obviously has a good sense of humour too going by her tweets.

(that seems the American right view/conspiracy) As I stated in my original post, I think it's largely because of the bizarre behaviour of her slack-jawed fanatical supporters. For those people, it's not enough that she's managed to create a lot of publicity for a cause she believes in: every joke she cracks, however, feeble, is the funniest thing ever and every tweet she sends is a milestone in the history of the service. They're even commending her for not using capitalisation or punctuation in her latest "hilarious" tweet (and would of course be commending her for having done so if she'd bothered to use it). It's all rather odd and more than a little disturbing.

Yeah. Maybe just step back from whatever media you're consuming. Life's too short
A story about a story about a story.....
It'll send you mad
More power to Greta - wish we had more like her

Don't get yourself worked up about it. I won't – I find it quite amusing really. It confirms my impression that The Guardian is the Seinfeld of newspapers – much of its commentary is about nothing in particular. Whereas the Daily Mail fills it pages with "hilarious" (one of its favourite words) photos of misbehaving "pooches" (ditto), The Guardian is replete with this sort of nonsense. The Independent is different again and seems to be mainly an agglomeration of clickbait and borderline trolling designed to annoy its readership, which is probably why there isn't a print edition any longer.

Haven't seen anyone refer to her as a comic, just comment that her tweet was amusing and that that repulsive character had been the agent of his own undoing. Then again, I don't read the Guardian which always posts clickbait nonsense to be the anti-Mail.

You seem obsessed with the The Guardian. If it bugs you so much don't read it. Personally, I'd rather read the Beano.👍

If you read them, I suspect you'll agree that the level of hero-worship is a touch unsettling: "one of the greatest tweets in history" is a bit much for a mildly amusing (if obvious) big car/small dick joke. The last time she was acclaimed as an earth-shattering comedian was when she unveiled her "Rick-rolling" joke, which was already a pretty tired meme by that point.

People in media are often hyperbolic in both praise and dislike. Doesn't excuse the appalling behaviour on social media towards her though which is nasty in the extreme.

No excuse for social media trolling, I agree. There are public figures I like and public figures I don't like, but I've never felt any desire to engage with those from either category.

Not read any of the stories, aside from the headline. Life is far too short
There's too much tribalism and intolerance
The REAL story is that we're rendering the planet uninhabitable
It's in the interest of a few selfish people to distract from the most pressing issue we have
Greta is someone doing their best to keep it uppermost on the agenda
We need more Gretas - and less negative noise around the people who are working to change policy
