Not sure there will be many Prefab Sprout fans here at TP I loves em Steve McQueen is one of my all time favourite albums
Steve McQueen turned 35 on 22 June 2020

The album went gold and has sold steadily ever since. I’m humbled that it’s become a classic and people still discover it, but I still remember driving away from the studio in the snow thinking we’d get a lot of praise for something I felt I didn’t have much to do with. It was us playing the songs in the studio – Thomas Dolby and the team did a marvellous job of making us sound grand and opulent. When we were doing Johnny Johnny there was this embarrassing clunk, which was the sound of me hitting the microphone stand while singing. Thomas loved the take and wanted to keep it, so he went to the Fairlight sampler, looked at the wave form of the sound and just took out the clunk. I remember thinking, “Wow, so that’s what pop is going to be like in future.”

Love that album, Faron Young, When Love Breaks Down etc chockfull of truly great tunes. Never bettered it, Jordan the Comeback comes close but the LP version had a pressing problem. They tried to cram the same amount of tracks on the CD on to one vinyl disc, the slightest scuff or bit of dust and it jumps all over the place.
One of their albums I can't get on with is 2001 The Gunman and Other Stories. McAloons lyrics go country and western. Was he trying to ride the alt America fad of that time?

Yes, Steve McQueen was unquestionably the group's peak.
I was far less convinced by the more obviously commercial and shiny From Langley Park to Memphis which was their commercial peak I would guess
I have Jordan on vinyl too and, as you say, it is too crammed. It does have some great tunes though.
All the subsequent albums have their moments but, like you, I've never got on with The Gunman and Other Stories
Critics also bang on about Paddy's solo album from 2003, I Trawl the Megahertz which I can take or leave.

I vividly recall I was sat in barber's chair in Birmingham around the time 'McQueen' came out and heard this for the first time. I asked the stylist who it was by and when my haircut was finished I proceeded directly to the record shop to buy it. A masterpiece.

'Jordan' was epic, and despite strong competition, this was the strongest cut on it, to my ear

I have their third album that's the only album of theirs I've heard. I just loved the single Cars and Girls. Golden Calf is a great song too.
Might give the first two a try.

Outstanding songwriter. Walked down the aisle to 'Doowop in Harlem' - and 'Jordan the Comeback' is extraordinary. MacAloon wrote 'Cowboy Dreams' too, and whenver I perform 'King of Rock'nRoll' I recall him saying he just wanted to get a load of people singing nonsense lyrics. Brilliant.

It's great to see you're still musing!
Yes, I'm busy with the cover version sets still, and have a band playing my songs, called The Boy Wonders. We're a bit sporadic as our guitarist disappears off on world tours with his other band from time to time!
I thought I might slow down but haven't managed it yet. Rezillos in Lewes?

Great news I was all set for Rezillos in Lewes and may still go if my pal is one of the supports which is a possibility BUT THEN it tuens out Rezillos are supporting The Undertones at Chalk in Brighton in September so I've got a ticket for that instead (and maybe as well as but dependent on support). Be good to see you again. Let me know if you every do a gig in Brighton
