a true Socialist stance would be pro Brexit Corbyn, like many old-fashioned loony leftists, was butthurt cos the EU prevented the Soviets from reaching the Atlantic. Corbyn was probably the biggest anti-Putin voice of the last 3 decades when people like Tony Blair were praising him.

There's nothing remotely socialist about Putin.

Even with the blatant attempt to suppress the vote via the introduction of voter ID, the local elections have confirmed that there is a strong anti-Tory vote. People are so fed up of wage cuts, run-down public services and little light showing at the end of the tunnel under this government that they are desperate to get rid of it
Hard to imagine what the Tories can do to change that narrative after 13 years of chaos and ever worsening public services etc

20% swing to them to win in Scotland, looks like people are fed up with the SNP.

Time for the Labour conference of saying and promising vague better days ahead. Why not have the balls to announce re nationalisation of rail and water, the public would love it, but they are far too gutless.

The public didn't seem to love it, as they got 32% of the vote. I'm not talking wholesale, that would be impossible to fund at present. Rail can be taken back in house by not renewing franchises, every one that has gone back to Government has improved but the present government still intend to put them out to tender again, with the usual privatised profits and Nationalised losses we have got used to seeing, especially since Covid. There is a solid legal case that "water" can be taken back in house without compensation given the way the companies have loaded themselves with debt, creamed off massive amounts in high level wages and shareholders dividends whilst presiding over the worst performance levels in memory and flooding our rivers and seas in shite. The Conservative Government's answer is to give them to 2050 to sort out investment and telling them they are free to pass the costs on to customers which is totally unacceptable. Privatisation of the railways and water is also supported by a majority of Conservative voters in recent polls, the only people for the non stop privatisation failure are the companies making billions and the Conservative MPs waiting for lucrative jobs on those companies boards once they get turfed out.

For what it's worth, I actually agree that water should not have been privatised. That was a privatisation too far for me – private monopolies are generally a very, very bad idea and need extremely firm regulation. Rail seemed to me more of a moot issue: certain things seemed to get better and others worse between privatisation and when I left the UK. The other privatisations I fully support, particularly telecoms – the UK's telecommunications infrastructure under the GPO was frankly primitive compared to other developed countries and the level of customer service was beyond appalling.

Another Portillo moment, Andrew Cooper scurrying out the fire exit just after the results were announced. Maybe he should revise his flow chart that castigated struggling families: Can you win a by election? > No > Fuck Off
