Finally got around to reading the Vive Le Rock issue on Oi/Streetpunk. What a whitewash, all the violence was caused by outside factions attaching them selves to one band, Bushell is allowed to bullshit unchallenged on his "left wing" credentials (Nicky Crane cover all just an awful mistake) Skrewdriver not mentioned once in a huge article. One of the most un journalistic features I have ever read.

One of the most un journalistic features I have ever read. I had mentioned this previously and was scoffed at Doug. Anyone who has experienced the 'excesses' of skinheads knows the truth. Sadly, there are people on here whose experience of them is virtually non existent. Like I said previously, the likes of VLR and Cherry Red seem more interested in rehabilitating 'Oi'. For money and nostalgia mostly. |

All that skinhead bollocks is massive in the US and Europe.
Mockney fuds like Lars Frederickson don't help with the rehabilitation of people like Roi Pearce etc who rubbed shoulders with the likes of Paul Swain who played in some dodgy bands.

Hard to imagine too many of our generation, here in the UK, want to buy Oi comps But, and it's another one of those subjects that becomes age related, it's not a "generation" it's 2 maybe 3 years one way or another that separates fans of 1st UK punk, and what followed. You had Hardcore vs the Anarcho scene vs the Oi/ streetpunk scene, people who liked the noisier side of punk went down one of those avenues or became more "arty" and chose the post punk direction. In the US it's hard to see any connection between the Hardcore scene and the NYC punk scene (I'm no expert on Hardcore though as I've said before, what I've heard sounds like it descends from UK Oi/streetpunk although I'm sure someone can set me straight) I know from a close friend that there is still a very tight knit Oi scene in London and gigs on general are of the large pub/100 Club sort of crowd levels which is as much as you'd expect for 2nd division punk bands. |

I've learnt, from my own recent dealings with record labels and band members/friends, that Cherry Red seems to have hoovered up a vast major percentage of UK recordings from Punk bands, mostly from the 80s that were on Independent labels, e.g. No Future, Anagram, Fresh Records, Fall Out - They then license that on to other labels all over the world. From what i have been reading, the bands have no say or control over this, are often not consulted and don't get paid much, if anything at all.
Cherry Red are like one of the biggest sharks in the sea of labels mostly dedicated to re-releasing out of print recordings, wether it's The 4 Skins, The Last Resort... or Howard Jones. So, yes... the Oi albums are just like the product of a sausage machine to them.

Cherry Red isn't the same organisation it was 40 years ago.
Like VRL, they'll market the Oi bands and airbrush the right wing out of it.

Bit depressing to read that about Cherry Red. I'd naively assumed they were more ethical - especially given their support of various EFL teams which has always felt more altruistic than commercially driven. Ah well.

They are not the same label, who facilitated the DK's for example. To be fair who is though? What I object to is revisionist and rehabilitation of Oi(later reinvented as 'streetpunk')when some of these bands were well dodgy. |
