ASH - RACE THE NIGHT Been playing this alot this week, the new album by ASH. A band probably best known here for their run of classic hit singles in 90's, but they've been consistently releasing strong albums for over 25 years too. I think Tim Wheeler is underrated as a song writer and guitarist. They may not be 'big' over here anymore and not played on the radio much, but are quite possibly still 'BIG In Japan' 🔥😎🇯🇵 There doesn't seem to be an ASH thread on here, so time to start one m'thinks. If you like'em ...what are your favourite songs?

Disappeared off my radar years ago, not sure why exactly. Maybe I (unfairly) lumped them in with the tail end of Britpop and when that died, I moved onto other things.
Saw them early in their career supporting Elastica. 1977 was one of the best albums of the nineties, Girl From Mars one the best singles as well. Headlined Glastonbury with only two albums under their belt.
Got Nu Clear Sounds and Free All Angels gathering dust in the shop back room, must dig them out sometime.

...that's one of my favourites from the first album too. Remarkable how young they were when it was written. Tim Wheeler was born in 1977, hence the album title

Ash were great but, like PU, I have ignored them since their glory years
Thanks Andy - I shall have a good old rummage in the back catalogue
Actually had no idea they were still a going concern

There's alot of variety and exploration on the new album, some of which works better than others perhaps.
Here is a rather luscious and lovely widescreen ballad, duet with Démira...

No Pulp and no Blur?
Pulp were flipping great and Blur have had, and continue to have, their moments
In other Ash news, I've given that album a spin Andy and first impressions are very favourable
Thanks as always

No. Blur are pretentious twats and Pulp couldn't write a hook if their lives depended on it.

No. Blur are pretentious twats and Pulp couldn't write a hook if their lives depended on it. Surely a touch of pretentiousness is what defines many a successful artist? I'd say Pulp have written many a memorable hook - hence the plethora of chart hits at their peak What about Stone Roses, The Verve, Supergrass, The Charlatans, Space, The La's. Oasis, and James?

No. Blur are pretentious twats and Pulp couldn't write a hook if their lives depended on it. Surely a touch of pretentiousness is what defines many a successful artist? Not when they're twats. Worthy but mediocre, and Cocker's yelping sets my teeth on edge. My only pick out of that lot is the La's. They predated Britpop and had some serious chops. One of the great 'what if's... so much potential.
