In case you can’t read it…. After nearly one and a half years the full update to www.punk77.co.uk is nearly done. 1000 odd pages totally reworked and a new look and feel to boot and even more punky content added. The Go live date is 27th September

Excellent news. In a perfect world it would be made into a physical book, the Encyclopedia Britannica of Punk and New Wave.

Cool. Here's hoping he dusts off the old forum... perhaps we could rekindle the old Dabble vs Joeydeacon magic

I only discovered about a few years ago that the name Joey Deacon actually belonged to a cerebral palsy victim. He featured on Blue Peter and Horizon episodes in the eighties in a BBC attempt to highlight people's disability and, hopefully, change discriminatory attitudes. It didn't pan out that way and the name 'Joey' became a term of abuse like 'spazz' etc.
I was moderator on the original Talkpunk and if I had been aware at the time of the origin of that poster's name I would have called him out on it.

I didn’t know that either
He was a poster who liked to court outrage as I recall

The age of the forum is dead
Very well established ones seem to prosper to a degree but now the action is mainly on social media
Still I’m glad a few of us old diehards keep the tradition going
Perhaps it’ll be like vinyl and make a comeback at some point

I've deactivated my Facebook. Social media is poison. Hopefully I'll stay off it and actually spend less time online generally.

The term 'Joey' or 'Joey Deacon' was used as a term of abuse when I was at a state comprehensive ( '77 - '81 ). I've still got a mate - now in his late 50's - who we still call 'Spaz', but that comes from his surname Tanner, which became 'Spanner', then 'Spazzer', then 'Spaz'. My favourite was a kid we called 'Chipstick' because he was long and thin.

I knocked all 'modern' social media on the head 3 or 4 years ago Old school forums for me. No algorithms or spyware shoving ads in your face I do this one all year round and in the winter a couple of American ones where musicians discuss music and politics and slag each other off. It's amazing how much time I've got back as a result.

I was aware of that... pretty characteristic of the poster in question, antagonistic and stridently non-PC. I'm pretty sure I spoke to him at a TP meet-up once, he came across a bit more polite in person as I recall.

I remember a short-tenured poster attacking JD for using that name and he basically told him to fuck off, but when the s-tp stated that he also had a disability JD became all friendly and solicitous.
He was definitely a shit stirrer, but he seemed to know his punk. Claimed to have some unrevealed role in the music business.

I've deactivated my Facebook. Social media is poison. Hopefully I'll stay off it and actually spend less time online generally. I'm a hopeless addict - though able to avoid mindless scrolling Insta and Facebook are good sources of gig info and club nights, plus keeping up to date with favourite artists I also get some good plant based recipe ideas off Insta too It is tricky to find a balance though and I admire you Stu and Zeo, and anyone who can completely avoid it
