Excellent autobiography about Britain's best kept secret. Concerns itself mainly with his musical formation 67 to 75 but also looks at his childhood years. A stutterer at 11 due to his Father's aggression (a copper, natch). Exquisite prose, recalling his life from the dusty attic of his mind. Honest, funny and sad in Henry The Human Fly the lowest selling Island label record ever and the dreadful Fairport Convention van crash that took drummer Martin Lamble and Thompson's girlfriend. Well recommended. I was not quite as enthused as you PU but glad to have read it I listened to the audiobook narrated by the man himself. For a Richard Thompson fan this is doubtless fascinating. From my more neutral perspective, I found plenty to enjoy and appreciate but was never enthralled. There’s little personal disclosure. His personal life is related in a detached manner aside from his Sufism, which is more interesting, if only briefly covered. His family and marital upheavals are barely touched on which is symptomatic of the book's dispassionate tone.

I think Thompson die hards like me will enjoy it immensely despite its several inconsistencies and emotional reserve. What I found really fascinating was the whole British folk rock scene of 67 to 75 was really no more than three dozen people in a handful of bands, many of them guesting with each other. Yet so high was the musicianship, the recorded output was innovative, never stale.

Late eighties, early nineties are the consistently best albums: Daring Adventures Amnesia Rumour And Sigh
Mirror Blue is a bit patchy but does include Beeswing and King Of Bohemia, two of his greatest songs.

Even though I'm not quite sold on them as a duo, I prefer his solo stuff, it's one of the best of the Richard and Linda years. When I Get To The Border is him finding his rock feet. End Of The Rainbow is one of his darkest songs, absolutely haunting.
