What's your view of The Boys? I loves em I think Ian over at Punk77 got it spot on... The Boys made arguably one of the best LPs of the 70s with their self-titled first album and provided the template for superior Pop Punk before even the Buzzcocks had got out of first gear.
Yet for some reason The Boys occupy a neglected position in relation to London's early Punk scene, probably because they weren't clothed by Sex or managed by Malcolm McLaren. Being tagged the "Punk Beatles" couldn't have helped either.
Plagued by mishaps, bad timing and plain bad luck they managed to keep smiling and come up with corking, hyper-speed pop classics like "Brickfield Nights" and "Rue Morgue". In short The Boys were a gem of a band and a total inspiration to any Punk band who value tunes over noise.
Matt Dangerfield: guitar/vocals Duncan 'Kid' Reid: bass/vocals Casino Steel: organ/piano/vocals Honest John Plain: guitar/vocals
Jack Black: drums
Brickfield Nights
Classic Rock: "The ultimate exemplification of The Boys' unification of spike-topped surliness and commercial classicism comes courtesy of the album's opener Brickfield Nights. How its coalition of Brill Building brilliance and bombsite-located leather-jacket failed to top charts worldwide is one of the 20th century's greatest unsolved mysteries."

Didn't help that they signed to NEMS which was really just a reissue label for old rock bands. I Don't Care was one of the first punk singles out of the blocks followed up by the poppy First Time not much later after. Two brilliant tunes but I can't recall much publicity or promotion for them, did the band ever get a feature in Sounds or NME?

Love em.From the punky pop of First Time to the ultimate classic of Brickfield Nights.I also liked the fact that they didn’t rely on one or two song writers Steel/Dangerfield/John Plain & Reid could all write a decent tune.

Definitely saw the odd advert in the music press for them back in the day

The Boys (AKA The Punk Beatles) were one of those bands that somehow didn't have hit singles, although they really should have... i mean c'mon bands like Tonight managed to. All four of their first run of albums have some catchy nuggets on them "To Hell With The Boys" in particular.
This should have gone Top 10...

That said, I can understand why the group ditched those mixes and went with the more produced sound for the actual album.

And of course this album (New Guitars In Town ) is essential if you like the Boys. One of the best cover versions ever for my money , bloody marvellous.

if The Boys float your boat... you might also like to tap your toes and puff your pipe to The Mattless Boys (The Boys minus Matt Dangerfield) The album sleeve might be crappy... but the tunes are TOPS!
