Not just me then….a few forums I look at seem to think it was great….a few old blokes play tribute songs. now if they had written just a few new songs I would have been keener. New tunes would def make it more interesting Billy Idol singing the Pistols just doesn't work, plus he's really not much of a frontman. Quite suprising how after all these years he looks so awkward. Iggy he ain't. Like you, I saw a lot of positive comments about the set. Must be very easily pleased

Can't understand why Jonesy will leave LA for the decidedly ropey Gen Sex shows but not for The Professionals, Idol really can't do th Pistols stuff, Jones should sing them but then I guess Idol would have noting to do for half the gig.

I think the Profs would be more time and he's a homeboy..plus I wouldn't think the cash is high end. I'd love to see them do something for last hurrah while jonesy is over. Anyhows I'm off to Iggy tomorrow so will see Gen Sex - could be the last time to see jonesy and cookie play - none of us are getting younger. I watched the Glastonbury set and Jones still has it, Cookie too, Idol seems really poor and cant sing a pistols song for toffee, or tbh the GenX ones. He looks 50 but sounds 80 and charisma none. He looks awkward and very reserved. I'll post how they are in real life when I get back - I wouldn't mind betting that SLF or Blondie will steal the day.

Saw Idol doing an unfunny advert for some business group with a group of golfers. Great to see he's still punk rock.

Well having seen them I have mixed feelings - did I enjoy it - hell yes I did. I will however never go to an outside "big" event again...it's just too damn big and I can't deal with that amount of people, warm cans of beer, idiots who don't seem to know how to order warm cans of beer, poseurs, cliches and picnic punks, picnics full stop and really piss poor sound at really low volume....oh and children - there were too many children..but..
That said Stiff little fingers put in a good shift that reminded me that I still want to make a racket.
Generation Sex...hmmmm...the tele doesn't do justice to hearing cook and jones lock in together live. Even with rubbish sound Jones sounds magnificent - fumbles and all, fumbles especially. Jones doesn't do sounding exactly like the record stuff, he does what he does on the day with sometimes wonderful sloppiness. He was on good silly form too which will be a nice memory to take. How cookie keeps going is beyond me, he looked impish and was bang on throughout. I'd love to hear them play an indoors place.....but without Billy Idol singing, TJ I have less of an issue with. Idol can have you one minute then he is fucking awful. Gen X songs he seems to do..okay-ish..Pistols ones forget it. He murdered Silly Thing - a Pistols song almost made for him...but he was woeful, not much better on the other pistols songs, they plod if that makes sense with him singing - they play normal time but just sound slow with him. TJ plays ok bass for Gen X but it's just plain and plonky for the pistols. He's no Matlock. It's a shame that Jones doesn't have a pop with the Professionals for a few dates - I wouldn't even have him singing - keep Tom Spencer. I saw them last year and they were superb and showed you dont have to be a young herbert to have energy. But I'm glad to have seen cook and jones having a crack.
The revelation to me was Blondie. I've always liked them, lusted after Debbie H but never really had them on much of my playlist - if they pop up great, if they don't they dont. But they were...it's hard to describe...beyond fantastic. Once again the tv and youtube don't do them justice. DH has something beyond normal talent. I've seen it in Bowie. I never liked Bowie, but I did see him once and you couldn't take your eyes off him. She's got that. This big fucking field who had been quite non commital so far came alive, from the front of the stage to the very back of the rear bar...it was like someone sent a bolt of electricity through it. She looked fantastic, sounded fantastic, cool and she's got a great band around her. Clem is bloody an enigma in himself. She has surrounded herself with a really professional set of people and Matlock - well great to see him and appreciate his bass versatility. DH had us eating out of her hands after 30 seconds. And still very sexy. I was left just staring and trying to commit as much to memory so as not to forget. Just Fantastic....
Then to Iggy Pop...well this old git knows when to give up. If I had to park my arse on the floor again and try to stand up, I don't think my knees would have let me. I like Iggy, but the thought of hannging around in that field for another 3 hours was too much so for better or worse we headed back to Croydon and having a cold beer sitting on something I can stand up from...I wish I hadn't bothered - what a fucking place Croydon is - who invented that place?? If one was going to get bitten by a dangerous dog breed, I'm fairly sure it would happen in Croydon.

Thanks your Lordship for you kind words. I'm slightly biased perhaps - Jonesy could fart in a bath and I'd probably write a positive review! I really wanted to like Idol, but being honest, he just wasn't very good - I hope some taped Silly Thing....it was beyond awful...However, that said, I'd go and see them inside if the travel and accomodation were handy and not too expensive...how many times will we have a chance to see Jones play in the uk.?

GENERATION SEX - BOB VYLAN - GRADE 2 Wolverhampton Civic Hall - 10th July 2023 The (not so) 'Famous Five' (Bristol Bath Crew) made our way upto Wolverhampton on a rather grey and soggy Monday afternoon. We found the venue in plenty of time, but their security checks were SO ridiculously slow, as a result, about two thirds of the three thousand plus punters that rocked up (including us) missed most of the opening set by power trio GRADE 2. A shame, as what i heard sounded pretty damn good. I found their stage moves to be perhaps a little bit on the choreographed and over rehearsed side rather than spontaneous... but you could call that good old fashioned showmanship i guess. Whatever... GREAT to see a young band going down well in front of a mostly older crowd. Likewise BOB VYLAN got a positive response, no matter how much they teased and baited us. To my ears they sounded like a cross between Stormzy and Rage Against The Machine... not that i'm an expert on either. Had time to grab a quick pint before a HUGE cheer from the crowd greeted the arrival onstage of Cook & Jones, Billy & Tony. Whatever slatings they might have got for their Glastonbury set, tonight they were VERY tight and REALLY cooking and having ALOT of fun playing, which was very infectious. For most of their set, the crowd were singing the songs louder than the band. One of the highlights for me was a brutal extended groove they locked into for 'Black Leather'. The greatest song Iggy & The Stooges never wrote. Songs i remember them playing were: Pretty Vacant, Ready Steady Go, Bodies, Wild Youth, Black Leather, King Rocker, God Save The Queen, Dancing With Myself, Problems, Kiss Me Deadly, The Untouchables, Silly Thing, (I’m Not Your) Steppin’ Stone, My Way, The Great Rock’n’Roll Swindle. I feel really lucky to have been at this gig, as i very much doubt they will play the UK again.

...i hope either that gig or the Manchester show that followed were recorded by their management. They were definitely, ON IT, on Monday night!
