Great stuff thanks Stu
“I’m not antisocial but I draw the line with pop groups,” says Robert Lloyd of the Nightingales. “People in bands aren’t generally my kind of people.” Pre-lockdown, Lloyd could instead be found at the pub or horse-racing track, but, despite his aversion to the fickle world of music, he’s been a fringe figure in it for more than 40 years. The band he fronts, the Nightingales, are a perpetual outsider outfit, deeply loved and revered by a cult following, but an unknown entity to most. Lloyd is also the subject of a new documentary, King Rocker, made by comedian Stewart Lee and director Michael Cumming.

Watched the Doc and it was truely awful.
Annoyingly awful as Stewart Lee comes as across as a pathetic sychophant.
Robert Lloyd's 'high point's' were working with Fuzzbox and Steven Wells and he tortures himself why he never 'made it'.
As for the music.
The Prefects-Bog standard forgettable punk.
The Nightingales-4th rate Fall copycats.
Both bands a victim of their 'unsuccess'.
Pretentious too.
Oh, half a mark out of ten for the Frank Skinner interview.

Wow 😱
Gotta say I had a very different reaction
Absolutely loved it
A crowd funded DIY labour of love tribute to a true maverick
The King Kong statue motif was the perfect way to tell Rob’s story
Some of the anecdotes were bizarre and wonderful
Successful video production company Postman GQ food critic Record company hits etc
Sorry you were less enthused

Let's be honest it was crap and thats me being kind.
Lloyd seemed like a nice guy but like Lee, he was and is bereft of talent.
Appearing on Razzamatazz being a career highlight.👍😎
Lee's fawning was excruciating embarrassing and Lloyd got it right when he said he over analysed everything.
Some people make a career out of being shite and Lloyd is one of them..
Failed Punk band Failed post punk band Failed pop star.
And desperately(and tellingly)a public school boy trying to cultivate an 'oik' image.
The only anecdote that was decent was the one where they wore those Clash t-shirts inside out and they had to endure the wrath of their fans.
Says more about the Clash and their fuckhead fans than it did about the Prefects.

I dont have much to add Other opinions are available and, as we know, our tastes frequently diverge I came to King Rocker as a big Stewart Lee fan - and Michael Cummings too (Toast, Brass Eye, Mark Thomas Product etc) The Nightingales had pretty much passed me by to be honest I can see/hear The Fall comparisons - Rob Lloyd seems a much nicer person than MES ever was I was a big fan of The Fall - true punk mavericks and a world away from the identikit studded leather jacket cliches I really like the music that featured in the doc and am inspired to try some of their albums Recent stuff on YouTube e.g. The Top Shelf from 2020's Four Against Fate LP works for me.... The Nightingales - The Top Shelf
By the by, did you know Stewart Lee recently had a number one single (me neither) - I know no one knows or cares what gets to number one in ye olde hit parade but this actually did get to number one... Asian Dub Foundation ft. Stewart Lee - Comin' Over Here (Official Video) After an intense campaign on social networks, their protest song Comin’ Over Here, featuring comedian Stewart Lee (taken from Asian Dub Foundation’s new album Access Denied), reached No. 1 on the UK single download charts on the very first day of Brexit. Unbowed and undeterred Asian Dub Foundation continue their sonic opposition to the powers that be and Comin’ Over Here kicks harder and higher than ever.
This record was in support of the Kent Refugee Action Network (KRAN), a charity that supports young refugees striving to live independent and successful lives in the community kran.org.uk Life can be beautiful
Finally back to the doc, and as mentioned on the Norm Fasey tribute thread... When the credits to the King Rocker documentary about The Nightingales rolled on Saturday night on Sky Arts there was a long list of all the people who had participated in the crowd funding. I was paying attention as I knew some people who had kicked in a few quid. Among the names was the late, great.... NORM FASEY

It was pretty obvious that Lee was paying Lloyd in drink for most of the doc. The dead giveaway was the way in which Lloyd looked at Lee half the time, letting him hear what he wanted to hear. It was so contrived. You're right though about Mark Smith. Now there was a talentless wanker, arrogant too. He was never a punk because like Lloyd the Fall weren't good or original enough to be a decent punk band so they moved onto something where they could be a big fish in a small pond. You may scoff at the 'studded leather jacket'brigade but some of them had more integrity that that drunk Mark Smith ever had.

Last night i went to see The Nightingales in Bristol at the Rough Trade shop. A very tight band that could effortlessly change time signatures with in songs and play without a break for a long stretch... sometimes this worked well, other times i found it a bit tedious.
Fliss Kitson (?) on drums was really impressive, not just on the skins but with her backing vocals.

This came in today on 12". Didn't put 2 and 2 together at first and thought it was a different Robert Lloyd, completely different from his Nightingales stuff. Urban legend is that he pissed the Virgin Records £50k advance up the wall and they dropped him sharpish after one LP and a few singles.

This part of Rob's career is mentioned in the doc Very curious in hindsight At that time though seemed like everyone wanted a slice of the pop star action
