I was about to start the discussion on The Undertones with the statement, surely there isn't anyone who doesn't love the Derry legends? Then I remembered that there was at least one, possibly two, people on the old TalkPunk forum who had a pathalogical hatred for them. I'm not sure we ever got to the bottom of what caused their hostility but there was definitely real antipathy towards them. Even the current incarnation, minus Feargal, are still a lot of fun
What about you? What's yer verdict?
Here's a personal top six favourite Tones tunes... 1. You've Got My Number 2. My Perfect Cousin 3. Jimmy Jimmy 4. Here Comes The Summer 5. True Confessions 6. Wednesday Week
You?
Favourite tunes? Favourite albums? Favourite memories?

LOVE'em... pretty much everything off the first two albums is GREAT i first saw them on the Hypnotised Tour April 1980 with the Moondogs. It was only the third gig i'd ever been to. I remember people started dancing from the off... which in the seated venue of the Colston Hall is no mean feat and Feargal jumped off stage to dance with the kids at the front. i never got round to buying their third and fourth albums... but have the two they recorded when they reformed.
They are still a great band to see live and have lost none of their charm. This was a cracking comeback single...

I've just been playing the debut LP - still great, obvs
Interestingly, and despite hearing it a gazillion times, the moment Teenage Kicks came on I was still filled with wonder and awe. Such a timeless classic.

The first two albums and a slew of singles makes them the top Irish band in my opinion.
They are SO Derry with no pretension. Anyone who knows Derry can see the city in them.
And all due respect to them, they never became a 'Troubles' band and they were the most political(with a small'p')of them all.
The songs speak for themselves and funnily enough, even though it's a great song'Teenage Kicks'is far from their best.
I saw them twice once with Fergal in the 80's and once without and they were great both times.
However, the audience the first time were the better audience as the second time they were just a bunch of woolly posers.

The Undertones were/are fantastic. Never seem them, but would jump at the chance (touring bands almost never visit my part of the bush). I only have the first two albums and love the energy and excitement they exude. Their later material was more nuanced and certainly enjoyable as well, but never equalled the earlier stuff.
Michael Bradley's book about life in The Undertones is essential as is the documentary available on DVD.
I really like this video made at a Brisbane concert in 2017

Their later albums when they reformed without Feargal tend to get over looked by folks that just want nostalgia and their second childhood on repeat, but there are gems to behold, this is enchanting...

Wow, that singer really gives the sound an edge as I was never keen on Fergals voice if I am honest.

...Paul McLoone is a great singer. I've seen him sing 'Julia Ocean' to a large room of pissed up Punks at a Brummie All Dayer and he had them in the palm of his hand... it was quite a moment. The Undertones were clearly STOKED to be onstage with Ed Kuepper playing a Saints classic in that footage from Brisbane.

Have to admit that apart from "Kicks" and "Get Over You" which had such classic hooks, I always found their sound just too "wimpy".
