What's yer verdict? I was just listening to... Suede - Dog Man Star (1994)In many ways this is peak Suede, certainly Butler era Suede. Bernie B is on fire here and Brett rises to the challenge of BB’s doomed, dense music. It’s often so dense it feels quite claustrophobic, with the ballads offering a bit of relatively light relief. Talking of which ‘The Wild Ones’ is a top ballad. All that said, I’d like more Glam stomps along the lines of the fab ‘New Generation’, which is why the debut is more to my liking. This LP also makes me realise how vital singers are to how I react to a group or a song. Brett Anderson is a wonderful singer: powerful, varied, nuanced, and committed. It’s a voice I always enjoy hearing. It would be easy to label Brett pretentious however he wears it well. No surprise to learn, having seen him talk about his first book, and having read it, that he’s actually insightful, self deprecating and funny.

I've tried all their other albums but DMS stands head and shoulders above the rest. You can hear the Bowie influences throughout but that's no bad thing. My favourite is Asphalt World, a slow brooding ballad until Butler goes all out axe man, terrific.

Although I had some friends who loved them, I never really saw the attraction of Suede. The most amusing comment I heard about Brett Anderson was that he was deeply upset that he hadn't been born as Angie Bowie

I'm reading Brett's second memoir
The first was brilliant and at the halfway stage this is nearly as good
The first was his childhood in Haywards Heath which was fascinating
This starts when Suede start to take off
He's a really talented and perceptive writer

Coal Black Mornings It's very good His father was very eccentric - a taxi driver who, at home, would parade around their council house dressed as Lawrence of Arabia and air conduct his favourite composers. The family didn't have a pot to piss in. Very evocative of the 1970s

Yeah, thought the first two were okay but nothing spectacular, seemed a lot of hype around them. Brett's book is supposed to be good.

Anyone seen Suede live recently?
They're coming to town next year
I've never seen them but have heard good things about the live experience
I like them without being any kind of massive fan

The show featured films by Derek Jarman and Anderson was an effective frontman.
