Could never abide the pompous twat and his "cleverer than thou" Will Self style cobblers. Interestingly I'm reading this at the moment from the wonderful "Strange Attractor" press... strangeattractor.greedbag.com/buy/a-hidden-landscape-once-a-week/where he pops up as you would expect. Have the music "inkies" been discussed here? I started out with NME and Sounds and MM only when there was an article I particularly wanted as it was a bit dreary. Charles Shaar Murray, Mick Farren and Nick Kent were the main writers who impressed me and Susan Williams/Steven Wells much later. Oddly, it was these old underground writers I enjoyed more than the Parsons/Burchill axis and the pretentious mob that followed. Always thought they were right up their own arse. ZigZag was worth a read at times also. |

Great working in central London where you'd get the new issue on the lunchtime the day before the rest of the country Generally read em from cover to cover I loved CSM, Kent, Fred Dellar, SWells, Ian MacDonald, Ian Penman, Danny Baker, Mick Farren, Mat Snow, Barney Hoskyns, Paolo Hewitt, Don Watson, Danny Kelly and David Quantick - and a bit later Andrew Collins, Andrew Harrison, Stuart Maconie, Mary Anne Hobbs and Steve Lamacq etc That book looks good Doug Are you enjoying it?  |

His book about his father's suicide [and that of Ian Curtis] is an easy read if you find his stuff pretentious. Black / self deprecating humour which I think are in most things he does.

Yes, enjoyable. Some of it is written down discussions from roundtable events with different people so can repeat itself slightly, but gives a good account so far. The Editor is the main archivist for Hoskyn's "Rock's Back Pages" |

It's often forgot as well as it became a NWOBHM mag, but Sounds was way ahead of the others on discovering punk.
