David Bowie's estate has sold the publishing rights to his "entire body of work" to Warner Chappell Music, including hundreds of songs such as Space Oddity, Changes and Let's Dance. WCM now has global music publishing rights to his song catalogue, the singer's estate told the BBC. Variety suggested the deal was worth "upwards of $250m (£185m)", but the terms of the agreement were not given. WCM head Guy Moot said they were "proud" to be "chosen as caretakers". www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-59860096

I can understand selling half the rights say, so that you have professional people monetarising the catalogue, but I'd want to keep half to pass on through the family line. Seems rather narrow sighted. You can also keep a modicum of control over how tacky the product it's used for, is.

So that's Dylan, Springsteen and Bowie all sold. If I had the money I'd buy Phil Collins back catalogue. Encase it in concrete and dump it in the middle of the Atlantic.

Seems rather narrow sighted. You can also keep a modicum of control over how tacky the product it's used for, is. The thing is these companies that buy up back catalogues have teams of people good at "extracting value" if you don't have that infrastructure then you have to wait for people to approach you about using the music, rather than aggressively marketing it which is what the experts do.

MOONAGE DAYDREAM (David Bowie Cover) Alicia Velasquez (A.K.A. Alice Bag) has released this homemade acoustic tribute to David as a free download. "David Bowie was a gateway drug for me, because once I realized that you could value androgyny and bisexuality and celebrate things that were unusual or extraordinary, it opened me up to a new way of loving myself. Once you learn to accept yourself, you find that you have a huge capacity for it. It’s like anything else—the more you do it, the better you get at it. That’s the beauty of being old; by then, you hopefully have learned how to provide yourself with validation" alicebag.bandcamp.com/track/moonage-daydream-bowie-cover?fbclid=IwAR1GC-FFYz5zJwXI3OAZf7IFPVfMUpDPUrKSMJG3884m_Vt_qsaw42gjONg
