Swell Maps - what's yer verdict? "Swell Maps began in 1972. They were formed by brothers Epic Soundtracks and Nikki Sudden together with their friend David Barrington. Jowe Head, Richard Earl & John Cockrill came on board over the next few years. Richard and Jowe stayed - the others became more temporary members... In September 1977 the Maps went in the studio for the first time - although many home recordings were made - and still exist! Swell Maps were (are) seen as being a cross between Can and T.Rex by the members of the band. www.punk77.co.uk/groups/swell.htm

Never got to hear the Occupied Europe album but Trip To Marineville was a real curio. It was like they had a series of good songs and then stretched, distorted and scribbled all over them. Sometimes worked, sometimes didn't.

Sometimes worked, sometimes didn't. This is a bonus track on a reissue of Jane which is pretty groovy... New York

Got it all, but was always more of a fan of Nikki's solo stuff and work with Dave Kusworth and Phil Shoenfeldt. Epic Soundtracks had a very underrated solo career also.
This is a 70's nostalgia trip...

With a flurry of recent activity, including reissues and the promise of a book, Duncan Seaman talks to Jowe Head, Biggles Books and Phones Sportsman, as well as Geoff Travis of Rough Trade about the cult DIY band.

Nikki did an autobiography just before he died... What’s it like? Sadly haven't read it. Copies are scarce and haven't seen one under around £30 and keep putting off paying that hoping a cheaper one will appear somewhere. I read on a blog somewhere that it is extremely egotistical so should be a laugh at least. Think it may have been a work in progress when he died so may have been hastily cobbled together after his death. Must get a copy some day though.
