You know he would have beat England singlehandedly anyway without that first goal. Hardly, makes him a scoundrel. I mean England cheated a goal in their own World Cup final so its horses for courses.

More Charlie went up his nose than Sabbath, Motley Crue and Fleetwood Mac combined. He always looked poorly mid nineties onwards.

Have you seen the documentary about his time in Napoli?
That's what makes me refer to him as a scoundrel - being unfaithful to various partners, the Camorra, cocaine etc
Part of the issue, a bit like Elvis, was that he came from a very poor background and was just not equipped to deal with the fame his talent brought him. Still, who could cope with that?
I still enjoy his goals against England. Sometimes you have to acknowledge and admire such extraordinary levels of skill from someone at the peak of their powers

Sometimes you have to acknowledge and admire such extraordinary levels of skill from someone at the peak of their powers Most England fans come from the default position of hating him out of pure jealousy. And you're right, you have to admire skill from any quarter as the players are the players and they're out to win. I haven't seen that doc but I know he did a lot of good for the poor in the favelas, which is unsurprising given his upbringing. I saw him playing against Scotland and he completely destroyed them(which obviously wouldn't be difficult).

Can't understand why an obituary was moved to 'sport'.
An obituary is an obituary surely?🤔

I'm probably one of the few Englishmen that didn't hate him.Thought he was a great player. If it had been one of our players that had put the ball in with their hand,i'm sure that would have been fine.RIP Diego.

Absolutely, it would be like denying that both Alan Shearer and Gary Linekar weren't world class strikers. Churlish.

RIP Diego That doc of him at Napoli is superb A scoundrel, but what a talent 60 though No age is it? The docu is brilliant. Explains how his phenomenal talent and charisma dragged Argentina to WC glory, and then did the same with lowly Napoli with the Serie A titles. Hard to imagine anyone getting close to the star power this guy had. -All the while ingesting mountains of bugle, alcohol, and fathering illegitimate children. A must-watch film even before his demise, now particularly poignant.

I must be one of the few TalkPunkers (or maybe the only one) who doesn't give a stuff about football, but everybody knew Maradona, so RIP Diego.
However, I am surprised nobody has mentioned the man's political profile, hanging out with Hugo Chavez, Fidel Castro and Vladimir Putin and slagging off the USA and the Vatican. He also did a lot of charity work. Some of his statements/actions might come across as a bit naive, but I wouldn't claim to be well-informed enough to judge. Maybe someone here can? There must be plenty of biographies of him already out there, but I am sure some new ones will appear soon
