Thanks Stu
I bought that Red Noise album when it came out - I liked it then and I still like it now
Better than anything else I've heard by Bill Nelson but I'm no kind of expert

Bit of a one off, still has a Be Bop vibe but moving with the times. Yet, he didn't follow it up and his later albums are a bit too esoteric for me. Last track of the album is my fave

Nelson has had an interesting career. He started out as part of the Yorkshire-based Holyground collective, which privately issued a number of extremely rare LPs. Nelson appears on two of the most sought-after, A-Austr and Astral Navigations, as well as issuing his solo debut on the label. Here he is in full Hendrix mode on Astral Navigations:

If I recall correctly, the original vinyl press of Astral Navigations goes for about £2000!

Nelson is a stylish performer and a good guitarist with some interesting ideas. His angular, power chord driven sound in BBD prefigured new wave in some ways.
Musically, to my ear, his tendency to employ a lot of changes came at the expense of memorable hooks, this performance being a case in point.

Out tomorrow (26 Feb 2021)... 2CD reissue of DRASTIC PLASTIC the final Be Bop Deluxe album from 1978, presented in both the original stereo version and a brand new mix, along with 14 bonus tracks. The album is also being made available in a deluxe six-disc limited edition, with 4CDs and 2DVDs Be-Bop Deluxe - Panic In The World.... (bit of a Covid anthem this one)

Wasn't a fan, they were one of the music press' "untouchables" and their importance was overrated in my eyes. Remind me of some dodgy gigs you'd go to thinking they were something they ended up not being. Saw Red Noise and just expected a lot more.

If I recall correctly, the original vinyl press of Astral Navigations goes for about £2000! Private presses of obscure British prog often seem to fetch eye-watering sums, despite the musical content being unlistenable tripe in most cases
