Listening to Sandinsta again, something I do every few years After the pinnacle of the peerless London Calling it really is just a sprawling mess - the hipster re-evaluation we discussed a few pages back is nonsense Uninspiring muddy production, a few ridiculous tracks, a lot of average material and some absolute corkers that would have made a rock solid single disc LP Too much weed consumption skewed their judgement I have never actually managed to listen to the whole album, I just get bored. Its a bit like the emperors new cloths to me, all my muso mates say its a great thing I just see a naked bit of wast of time ?? It might just be me ?

The evolution/progression of some of the bands that began from the 'Class Of 76' was so fast, i think they often were ahead of a large percentage of their audience. At the time, i couldn't really get my head around The Clash grappling with 'Funk' (Magnificent 7) ...and the first time i heard Bankrobber and The Call Up, i thought they'd lost the plot, but as i got older and maybe more open minded, i could appreciate how bold and experimental their music was getting, rather than just repeating themselves. 'The Call Up'is a good song. I didn't like it at the time either but now...π

Seems we're all in agreement on this one I think that song works well due to it's lyrical themes and content too.π

About the best thing you can say about Sandinista is it showed ambition

... Sandinsta ...a sprawling mess I have never actually managed to listen to the whole album, I just get bored. I can only listen to the first two albums, after which they which they appear to have been struck down with musical diarrhoea, apart from the occasional decent single.

Much prefer London Calling to Give Em Enough Rope Rope was a bit of treading water album - London Calling was where they truly fulfilled all their potential Sadly never to reach those dizzy heights again. Still how many bands produce a London Calling ? Precious few

^^
'Rope' doesn't get much love but it's still the one I listen to the most. They were branching out musically but still had a bit of an edge.
'LC' would have made a good single album. 'Sandininista' would have made a barely acceptable EP.

The Clash were a better singles band but I stopped at London Calling. Bankrobber is a good song but it's too long. Other than the first two albums the majority of their songs are overblown and pretentious. London Calling has around 4 good songs on it and Sandinista around 2 or 3.

I nearly bought it, but I was put off when I bumped into Tony Chaos, a punk rocker from a nearby village the day after it came out. He was striding purposefully in the direction of WH Smiths, wearing a black armband, to return his copy and obtain a refund.

Myself and my pal saved up for it and got it out of Listen records in Glasgow City Centre in anticipation of an album like London Calling the single and apart from Hateful and Guns of Brixton we thought it was utter mince.
Mind you my pal hated it more than me.

I prefer listening to cut the crap than Sandinista...There I have said it There's a great single album in Sandinista plus an accompanying 12" single. But come on, it's streets ahead of "crap" which has 2 decent songs at best and had little band involvement as Bernie Rhodes was attempting to control everything and get joint songwriting credits before the cash cow died.
