Nesmith wasn't a team player. He could afford to walk out of their reunion tour cos he had his mum's Tipp Ex money to fall back on. Fancied himself as a serious solo artist but his crowning achievement was that bland 'Rio' tune which was about as inspiring as 'Je Suis un Rock Star' by Bill Wyman What have you heard of his solo career? Nesmith came back many times for reunions and him and Dolenz are doing one this year!🤣

It was more to do with the fact that in the first half of the 70's Nesmith concentrated on his own career.
His mother sold the company in 1979 so he wasn't even entitled to any of the money when he was doing reunions with the Monkees.
More than anyone I think he wanted to be treated as a 'serious' artist along with Tork which is why Tork recorded for Nesmith's record label.

Tork was a little bitter in later years that his boyband fame stopped him being taken seriously as a proper musical artist. He also did some jail time for pot possession

Brian Auger being on this week's Rockonteurs podcast reminded me that he and Julie Driscoll appeared on the Monkees TV show.

Wow. That’s pretty out there
Is that the origin story?
I was an avid viewer as as kid but remember very little about what happened beyond the lads larking around

I was an avid viewer as as kid At age 3 I went face first through a window. 36 stitches, nearly lost an eye. After I came out of the anaesthetic and I knew what day and time it was I realised the Monkees were on. The nurses told me I must remain in bed but I was not having it, and I got my way. Just as well or there would have been hell to pay if I didn't.

The Monkees theme tune is unique for me in that it evokes two contrasting emotional responses; joy and anticipation, or desolation, depending on whether it is accompanied by the opening or closing titles of the TV show. I used to look over my shoulder expecting The Monkees to be standing there, but they never were

That theme tune is a beaut
Great story Zeo, and very telling of their importance to us young pups in that era
