Gentlemen and slimeballs, lend me your ears! I am a veteran record collector (as my man politician2 will corroborate) and I’ve often complained about scalpers and how they cynically profit from the demise of artists or how they shark vinyl drops and then sell them at an insane markup. I don’t have a problem with flipping things for cash but when these people stop actual fans from buying physical copies of the music they love. Now, Spellling released an album called “The Turning Wheel” to critical acclaim about two weeks ago and the internet’s most famous music reviewer Anthony Fantano (https://youtube.com/c/theneedledrop) gave it a perfect 10/10. Usually when AF gives a perfect score to a project the physical copies instantly sell out everywhere and scalpers are all over the artist’s Bandcamp like fleas and the rarest variant goes up in value significantly. I liked the album, I thought it was good and I was impressed by it but it’s not my favourite thing that’s came out this year. I saw the review drop and I went and had a look at Discogs and saw the rarest variant was being sold but only at a relatively small markup (less than double) so I copped it. When I woke up today every copy was gone, sold out everywhere and people are posting saying they’ll pay several times the shelf price for a copy. Would I be a hypocrite if I sold my copy?

We need to know your reasons

Why would you sell it though Smog? We need to know your reasons I could be tempted if people are willing to offer enough money, I don’t start my new job for two weeks so my arse is bony at the moment lol. I just see people in the reviews on Discogs saying they’ll pay this and that amount and I wonder if I’d be a hypocrite if I sold to one of the people making the offer.

I wouldn't call you a hypocrite if you need the £££
If you're a collector though would you regret in years to come?

Not at all Smog. You bought it initially because you were interested in it. Scalping is purely buying something to make profit later.

If you bought it because you genuinely love the music then why sell it? If you were that skint you wouldn't have bought it at double the market rate in the first place. Nothing to do with morality though, record labels will keep on fleecing the public as will the bands who indulge in the high cost, low availability model to maximise the money they make. i don't have a problem with them doing it, just wish they would have the honesty to admit why they create this market. I myself far too frequently give David Tibet too much of my dosh for yet another limited edition signed copy of his latest vinyl outpourings. Only have myself to blame and I can bullshit the wife with "well love, it's an investment"

I don’t love the music, I liked it enough to pay what I did but not I’m not sure I like it enough to not sell it for the prices being offered. I’m also a big fan of the manufactured collectibles myself, I picked up a hand-painted and numbered Massive Attack EP for £300-£400 which now switches hands for over a G. I also bought five Aphex Twin signatures from a friend with the knowledge I’d probably be able to flip them for a tidy profit if I wanted to.
