Arthur 'Neddy' Smith is serving a life sentence for murder, but back in the 1980s he was running wild in Sydney committing armed robberies, dealing heroin and getting on the piss with his bent-copper mates, including the notorious Detective Sergeant Roger Rogerson. Smith claims he was given a 'Green Light' by New South Wales police to commit crime, as long as he gave them their cut and no police got hurt as a result. His claims sound incredible at times, but they have been backed up from other sources. I was aware of a lot of this at the time and drank in many of the pubs Smith mentions in the book, but can only thank Christ I never crossed paths with Smith or his gang mates when they were on the piss (always), as plenty of people found themselves bashed or stabbed when they were on the rampage. Most of the violence happened to people who said or did the wrong thing, but who hasn't done that at some time?
