Loving working my way through these interviews One thing that emerges is just how constrained Paul felt in The Jam and how he wanted to play so many other different types of music and styles. It becomes very obvious why he had to split the group.

He did seem rather to cast off the others with a certain level of contempt though as if they were no longer worthy of the great man. Maybe. I think the overriding feeling was frustration. Frustration with their musical limitations, frustration with being seen as a spokesperson for a generatiion, frustration with feeling constrained in The Jam. All these people who have been interviewed for the podcasts have all worked with him, including Rick Buckler, and none have a bad word to say about him. Rick was pissed off that it was presented as a fait accompli with no consultation, other than that he was v positive about PW, recognising he would never have achieved what he did without being aligned to such a talented person, and grateful for the good times.

Butler and Foxton did have bad words to say though, they just mended bridges over the past few years. I know he's become a bit untouchable, but apart from a few stand out tracks I find his second rate Stevie Winwood obsession rather dull and as for The Style Council, well, what can one say. Wildwood was the last thing I felt worth listening to more than once.

Yeah, he's not for every one. I really connected with The Style Council. I was quite into jazz, northern soul, deep soul etc and then int house at the same time and thought the first couple of years were extraordinary. He was really trying to push boundaries and keep everything loose, free and spontaneous. Taking a lot of risks too. The last 10 years have probably been the most creative of his entire career. He's on an incredible roll at the moment. The most recent eight albums on this list (since 2008's 22 Dreams) are as diverse, eclectic and accomplished as anything he has ever done... www.paulweller.com/discography/

The majority verdict is that the song is about Soo Catwoman who tried to latch onto the band after the demise of the Pistols. However, Wikipedia has got it down as an attack on Julie Burchill, new one on me.
