I listened to the first two albums by The Jam today
Never a massive fan but they were flipping great though weren't they?

Debut is brilliant, start to finish. Modern World patchy, some songs not even worthy of b sides. Most biographies talk of that period point to Weller being depressed and poorly, leaving studio sessions to Foxton and producer Vic Coppersmith Heaven. After that it's hit after hit. By the time of The Gift, you just knew that a major change was on the cards.

What tracks on the second album came in for the greatest criticism? The Foxton ones? London Girl maybe? I think it's still a good album. Not as consistently good as the debut though, for sure.

The second album was a bit too soon after the first, so a bit rushed - and there was no obvious progression, like we got from All Mod Cons onwards but, as jsm says, still plenty to enjoy on it

Here Comes The Weekend with its painful reference to Zaire and Don't Tell Them Your Sane are two real clunkers imo. It got negative reviews on its release and the US version had All Around The World added to give it extra Oomph. I remember buying it and being disappointed, the singles kept me interested until All Mod Cons.

I think I might go Setting Sons - but they're all good
This is a classic....

Setting Sons excellent but bookended by the song Weller slightly regrets writing, Girl On The Phone and the pedestrian cover of Heatwave. In between them it's class all the way: Eton Rifles, Private Hell, etc and my fave Burning Sky.

Yep, you'll get no arguments with 'Setting Sons'.
It was all downhill from then on but to be fair not as rapidly as some bands.

Having thoroughly enjoyed the Sky Arts documentary on The Style Council I'm now underway with The Jam: About The Young Idea (2015) Very impressed by it so far
A retrospective view of The Jam, as told through archival footage, interviews with band members, and commentary from those influenced by the band and its music.

It's wonderful jsm
I've finished it now - a great tribute.
All the main players are involved plus lots of fans get their say too
Steve Brookes, original member, also gets a fair amount of time at the beginning. Him and Weller together both v relaxed and enjoying the experience

I have seen a double DVD version of that documentary that includes a fantastic live concert from RockPalast TV in Germany 1980

I thought that concert was actually very average Andy a bit subdued not helped by the choice of songs.😕
