Give the Anarchist a Cigarette - Mick Farren
I think the brilliant writer Ian MacDonald was fond of saying that 'the sixties' started in 1965 and ended in the early seventies. Certainly the counterculture was still going strong in 70/71/72 - free festivals etc.

I recently finished David N. Meyer - Twenty Thousand Roads: The Ballad of Gram Parsons and His Cosmic American Music.
Good read and different perspective on the era

These are a few ideas... The Autobiography of Malcolm X (1965) by Malcolm X I'm just finishing this, and have thoroughly enjoyed it. I really knew very little about the man before reading and have not even seen the film, which I will now watch as I believe it's on Netflix. The first 70 pages which served as a foreword by Alex Haley were tough going as it deals with the process between the two in creating the book. However, once the book reverts to the story - as told by Malcolm X - it becomes fascinating and a real document of a part of America in the early/mid 60's.
