I guess the bigger issue is tightening up the rules on these side hustles
No appetite for that on the Govt side given their huge majority and so many of them have got their snouts in the trough
I'd hope the more egregious examples would be punished - a lot of this stuff is so obviously "cash for questions"
I ain't holding my breath though
No surprise that this all happens so soon into Johnson's tenure
A PM with no integrity or conviction with a large parliamentary majority and massive self-interest is keen to sideline our limited democratic checks and balances
Here's hoping the outrage contines

The story should run for a while yet though
Conservative MPs have to undo the vote they cast to defend Owen Paterson (how thrilled are they about that?) and again when the standards committee presents its recommendations about how to change how these things are policed
Johnson himself has earned more than £4m in outside earnings over the past 14 years so is sitting in a very large glass house as far as second earnings goes
The obvious solution is a ban on outside consultancies and a sharp limit on second jobs. That would hit a lot of Conservative MPs in their wallets and be a particular source of resentment given Johnson's own track record

Mr. Cox is getting completely lambasted atm, I bet they’re all wishing Mr. Patterson took the suspension and kept his head down.

Car-crash fortnight shakes Tory faith in Boris JohnsonA shame-faced Boris Johnson told his own MPs this week that he had “crashed the car into the ditch” by misjudging the Owen Paterson scandal. As he heads to his country retreat of Chequers this weekend, some at Westminster have begun to wonder if he has what it takes to get the show back on the road.
As well as exposing Johnson’s lax approach to probity in public life, the Paterson debacle highlighted what those who have worked with him say is one of his most maddening characteristics – the impetuous style of decision-making and tendency to sudden reversals cruelly caricatured by Dominic Cummings as “like a shopping trolley”.www.theguardian.com/politics/2021/nov/20/last-ditch-car-crash-fortnight-shakes-tory-faith-in-boris-johnson
