The Mezzotint - BBC i player
After a couple of previous misfires imo, Mark Gattis perfectly captures MRJames' haunting tale of a cursed engraving. Rory Kinnear excellent as the investigating curator.

Count Magnus
BBC 2, Friday 23rd Dec, 22.00
Another MR James classic story with Mark Gattis again in the directors chair. Last year's Mezzotint was excellent so really looking forward to this.

Rather average to be honest. The original short story dealt more with Magnus and his dark dabblings. This just didn't do it proper justice.

www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001ghw9The Signalman Drama In Jonathan Holloway’s newly imagined adaptation of Dickens' popular short story, The Visitor on a recuperative walking holiday in the Sussex countryside happens upon a solitary signalman in a dank, icy cold railway cutting where the sun never shines, and unexpectedly finds himself part of a spooky tale of spectral, supernatural occurrences. Charles Dickens wrote this much-loved ghost story in 1866 following his own experience of being involved in a train crash at Staplehurst in Kent when he was travelling with his mistress Ellen Ternan and her mother. He helped rescue fellow passengers and was deeply affected by the experience, possibly suffering from what we could now call PTSD, losing his voice for two weeks after the event and then becoming ever more frightened of railway travel. He took a keen interest in railway safety and the lives of the railway workers. These themes have inspired this new adaptation in which Jonathan Holloway adds an additional, unexpected twist to this classic short story. At the centre of it is the railway tunnel with its hellish mouth, humming telegraph wires infused with the voice of prehistoric evil, an environment full of dread in which it is difficult to tell night from day, a constantly startled railway signalman, and The Visitor who is driven to ask more and more questions - all of which receive alarming answers.

Talking Pictures a running at least two of the classic seventies stories. Two MR James classics, tonight Stalls of Barchester 8.30 and Friday, the disturbing Lost Hearts. More to come hopefully.
I have also noticed Mark Gattis has adapted Conan Doyle's Lot 249 for the BBC this Christmas. Can't see a date or time yet. If anyone knows, please post here.

Many thanks LE. I see Talk Pics is running a few more next week. One called Stigma which I can't recall, possibly because it aired on Christmas Eve 1977. I was probably comatose in a ditch that night.

♤♤ Possibly the best one ever, Peter Vaughan as the treasure hunter who finds more than he bargained for. Hope they're also showing Whistle, And I'll Come To You, the most frightening one.

Lot 249
Another Gattis misfire. More of a monster than a barely seen spectre and it misses the point entirely of what a ghost story is. These recent forays are too short in length (27 minutes) to build any atmosphere and tension. The original seventies shows ran for fifty mins to over an hour allowing characters development and nuance. Very disappointing.
