This book claims to be definitive, can't see how it can add any more than the previous Trevor Dann, Patrick Humphreys and sister Gabriella's biogs. Drake only made it to 26 years old, what more could be said? A cynic would think that this is just a regular decade on, money making rehash. Richard Morton Jack, the author, is a friend of mine and was my co-author for Galactic Ramble and Endless Trip, the definitive reference works on British and American rock of the late sixties and early seventies. He spent a couple of years of his life interviewing anyone and everyone connected with Drake, with extensive input from his sister Gabrielle (who did not assist with previous biographies), so I think we can safely assume that this will be the last word on Drake's life and career.

Fair play to your friend Poly and I hope it's a success. But who is the target audience? I've read my fill of Drake biogs, are there younger people out there just finding out about him? Apart from Cerys Matthews he rarely gets any airplay now and his back catalogue used to sell quite well, not so much now. He truly was from another time and, sadly, he, imo, is fading into the shadows of musical history.

Now as always, the shallow masses will lap up what is served up to them on the radio and the cool people will seek out cool sounds. I hope that doesn't come across as condescending.

Don't get me wrong, I would love it for him to be in the same pantheon as Beatles, Dylan and Prince but sales suggest otherwise, plus he only has three studio albums to his name. I could do a straw poll with my younger customers and I bet only one in five will have the slightest inkling of who he is. Sadly, again in my opinion, the third rate singer songwriters like Capaldi, Sheeran and Bugg appeal more to the under thirties.

Capaldi, Sheeran and Bugg appeal more to the under thirties. See above. I turned my son on to Drake when he was 20-ish and he turned all his friends to him in turn. I was turned on to him in my 20's by word of mouth, too. I think Chris Rea was the most-played singer-songwriter on the radio at that time.

I'd have said that Drake is one of those artists whose appeal is enduring (he has quite a number of younger fans) yet limited (he's not for everyone). However, the people who like him really love him, so there will definitely be a market for this book.

As the resident young’un I can say I’ve spoke to fellow whippersnappers who aren’t really into music and a surprising amount have at least heard of “Pink Moon”, I feel like time is aging his music and his legacy rather gracefully.

Naturally those shit cunts would appeal more to gurning cretins (everybody under 30, lol) as opposed to a singer who has been dead for like fifty years and who has a small discography and little to no material outside of those three albums to engage with. The comparison seems kind of odd.

The book is excellent, lots of surprising stuff I didn't know. Fascinating to read even if you're not a fan. As obviously this was before the internet, mobile phones and multi channel TV.
