'Pink Moon' was his best set, raw and stripped down, the previous two having been smothered a bit by Joe Boyd's (albeit well-intentioned) overproduction. Quite harrowing to listen to in places, though, as Nick's fragile mental state is illustrated all too clearly

You old fuckers would cream your jeans if you saw my OG copies of the ND trilogy, “Cello Song” is probably my favourite by him.

Dare I say, he's okay, but the way he's posthumously been made into some untouchable figure, I do find odd. Same with people like Karen Dalton. People seem to respond to their frailties maybe more than honestly appraising their output. Maybe more important for who they influence than what they do.

I don't think my love of his music is informed by the personal tragedy that was his brief life, but who knows? I also like Karen Dalton

You’re gonna get it now boy I know, that's what I mean by untouchable. He's beyond reasonable critique. Fey nonsense most of it (I'm doubling down). John Martyn should have given him a proper slap round the head and told him to sort himself out. His sister made more of an impression on me in UFO.

Got a copy of 2007's Family Tree in the other day, I never knew it had an official release, thought it just existed on bootleg. Very patchy with Nick's Mother singing a couple of old standards and Gabrielle joining in duets. 90% covers but there are Way To Blue and Day Is Done in exquisite one take demos. For completists only.

As a musician I can tell you that his technique takes some beating. His intricate fingerpicking and idiosyncratic tunings still puzzle far better players than me. He had a unique way with a melody too, and showed great potential as a lyricist. As a personality, file under the same category as Syd Barrett, Peter Green, Skip Spence etc... too fragile to prevail in the rough and tumble of the music business of the time.

This book claims to be definitive, can't see how it can add any more than the previous Trevor Dann, Patrick Humphreys and sister Gabriella's biogs. Drake only made it to 26 years old, what more could be said? A cynic would think that this is just a regular decade on, money making rehash.

This book claims to be definitive, can't see how it can add any more than the previous Trevor Dann, Patrick Humphreys and sister Gabriella's biogs. Drake only made it to 26 years old, what more could be said? A cynic would think that this is just a regular decade on, money making rehash. According to that review... Richard Morton Jack’s authoritative doorstop is, though, the definitive word on Drake, insofar as the story of a deeply inward-facing man can be told by others. It builds on everything that has gone before and adds so much detail it can seem, at times, overwhelming. Although a foreword by Gabrielle Drake maintains that this is not an authorised work, she provided Drake’s own papers, her father’s diary and gave her blessing for everyone around Drake to contribute. Patrick Humphries, who published a biography of Drake in 1997, even handed over his own archive. There is something of Mark Lewisohn’s approach to the Beatles here: no childhood friend or university contemporary is left un-interviewed. There are a great many school reports. Drake’s guitars are reverently documented. So in this instance definitive is a synonym for totally exhaustive I've only read Patrick Humphreys which I found interesting and worthwhile and met all my needs This is one for the hard core I'd say And, as the review concludes... This book is illuminating, but Drake himself remains painfully unknowable.
