Tom's 70 this year and I was going to be seeing him live
Hopefully it will on for his 71st birthday
I was just watching this 2019 version of Power In The Darkness
Needless to say the lyrical content is now rewritten for the modern world...

So, what's the TP verdict on Tom and his Robinson Band?

First album is a classic of political polemics but was it punk? Right place, right time for a rock band maybe. Saw them several times at their pomp and they were some of the best gigs I've been to. Danny Kustow was a fantastic guitarist, who should have been held in higher esteem.

Probably not punk but definitely part of the overall scene - bit like Elvis Costello

“Up against the wall” one of my all time faves.Didn’t really listen to him after the first album.

I love that first album and also 'War Baby'.After that though...mind you I'm still open minded enough to listen to more
It sounds pretty punk to me however and theres no way that he/they should be mentioned in the same breath as that talentless tool Elvis Costello.

War Baby was great
First two TRB albums are pretty good
Did anyone use their spray paint stencil?
I've set up an Elvis Costello thread

Absolutely love the first album, brilliant stuff.
I saw him in Bristol on the albums 40th anniversary in 2018, it was great to hear the album live and in running order, and played/sang with the same passion that he had back then. Top night.

Like most of us 70s Kids, i remember the singles and their regular appearances on TOTP. I never saw them live, but recently discovered some fantastic footage on YouTube of them playing in New York around 1979. Danny Kurstow (RIP) one of the best and most underrated guitarists from that era.
Tom's lyrics were always very witty... this is superb

Where do we stand on their most obvious hit... Looking about as punk as a bunch of supply teachers on their first TOTP appearance

Tom himself has said it is his least favourite penned tune. A Hi Ho Silver Lining type stomp for the seventies school disco.

At least Buzzcocks had short haircuts. And, when they came out, which was before punk became codeified, they looked very punk coz there was no template
TRB would barely have caused a second glance in their togs
Talking of Buzzcocks....we need a thread

The Ramones all had long hair and silly bowl cuts and they looked the stupidest non punk band in the world.
I think there was a punky look to them but Tom was too old to look like a real punk.

I chat online a fair old bit with Neil Thompson, ex-guitarist from The Carpettes and he recently posted about them touring with Tom's next band after the demise of T.R.B. I'd forgotten what a damn good band SECTOR 27 were. I remember John Peel used to play their singles alot. Found this album in my friendly local Record Shop this week for a fiver. Released in 1980 - Their only album. A very different sound to TRB but the lyrics and his vocals are as sharp as ever.
