Revisited this beaut over the weekend.... The Pogues - Rum Sodomy & the Lash (1985)It’s now hard for me to be objective about this album as I was a big fan of the group and played it to death when it came out. I saw The Pogues many times and as you may know yourself they were a visceral and life reaffirming live experience. Rum Sodomy & the Lash, their second album, captures the moment where they were fast evolving from a ramshackle and ragged fusion of punk and Irish folk into something far more accomplished and sophisticated. I love it. There’s passion, tragedy, social commentary, anger, humour and a wild unpredictable edge to proceedings. That it now contains The Poguetry In Motion EP is the cherry on the cake. There are numerous examples of Shane’s rightly lauded songwriting here, not least The Auld Main Drag, A Pair of Brown Eyes, Sally MacLennane, and A Rainy Night In Soho - classics one and all. The Pogues ability with a cover version is also something to behold… And The Band Played Waltzing Mathilda, Dirty Old Town and I’m A Man You Don’t Meet Everyday. Music doesn’t get any more essential than this sublime and vital album. Crank it up and rejoice that you are lucky enough to have shared the world with Shane and The Pogues. 9/10

A Pair Of Brown Eyes lyric has always intrigued me. Googling it brings up very little subject matter. For me it's about a bomb going off in a bar and the first person loses the one he loves in the carnage.
