Saw some teenagers blasting out The Beach Boys at the skate park at about 7 am this morning
I was heartened by this unlikely scene
How much do you love The Beach Boys?
Have you read Heroes and Villains?
Favourite albums?
Favourite songs?
Brian's song of escape from his horrendous father...

Was listening to The SMiLE Sessions earlier.
A work of genius.
The eternal imponderable.… What would have happened if SMiLE had been released in 1967 ?
Would it have been heralded as a masterpiece ?
Or would it have just been regarded as another psych inspired piece of whimsy ?
Do you think it is worthy of its legendary status ? Or is it just an interesting period piece ?

Wonderful tune - and another SMiLE song Nice. You have to go to YouTube to watch it. It being.... Beach Boy Brian Wilson performing "Surf's Up" from the then "upcoming" Smile album in 1966. If you're a big Beach Boys fan, this clip just might bring a tear to your eye.
This is an excerpt from Leonard Bernstein's landmark CBS-TV documentary special, Inside Pop: The Rock Revolution, which aired the following year on April 25, 1967. Bernstein's film also featured Graham Nash and Frank Zappa and was one of the very first serious documentaries about rock music—Bernstein took the then-unusual approach of treating pop as a legitimate art form—produced for American television. There's a similar version on that SMiLE box set that came out in 2011 Surf's Up: Piano Demo (Master Take/2011 Smile Version) · The Beach Boys

'Surf's Up' is a patchy album, but worth the price of admission for the title track alone, and Carl's masterpiece is a bonus.

I've read Heroes and Villains and seen the TV movie.
If you like the Beach Boys you should like this. Van Dyke Parks of course was a collaborator. One of the greatest songs of all time for me.

Too west coast America for me, I feel the same about the Doors. I have Pet Sounds and there are a few great songs on it but overall they don't do much for me. Same with all the plaintive whiny Laural Canyon types. Was always more an East coast music man. Perhaps we can start our very own Biggie Smalls/ Tupac, board rap war.

Too west coast America for me, I feel the same about the Doors What about Love? LOVE Alone Again Or (1967)Again, I always thought there was an element of "emperor's new clothes" about that record, they just became the obligatory entry in all the "best ever" lists along with Gaye's "What's Going On" etc. Every new generation of journalists has to proclaim it to the hills in fear of being called a philistine. It's okay, honestly wouldn't say much more than that. Too many "untouchables" and "sacred cows" in music for my liking.

I came across Forever Changes long before it was ever lauded to the skies in best of lists. A girlfriend's Mum had it in the handful of LPs she owned and, intrigued by the cover, I gave it a spin. I never looked back. Love at first listen. Not so keen on their other albums though. Fine but patchy.
