Full English (where he retreads JB Priestley's 1930s tour of England) is not one of his best. Enjoyable but rather hurried as the cities and towns visited could have done with more investigation and comment, Nottingham, Leicester, Coventry and Birmingham are spread across a measly two chapters, whereas the Cotswolds gets a lengthy write up. The understated yet biting social comment that permeates his previous work is also sadly lacking.

Just finished Full English, like I said enjoyable but lacking that something from previous works. Though the chapter about the rise and (slight) fall of Stoke Five Towns and the Potteries in the production of china is very enlightening. I found myself turning over plates, bowls and teacups to see the manufacturer and location.
