I'd only be nine years old during Mexico 1970 but I remember it vividly. Brazil the greatest team of all time, Alberto, Jair, Rivelino, Tostao and yer man of course. Pele's header against Italy was astounding, he jumps and seems to hang in the air before he decides where to put it. RIP

The Greatest Player I never saw.
A lot of us are old enough to have seen Maradona and Messi of course but Pele was like like a ghost regailed by our parents and grandparents because in truth for most kids who grew up in the 70's he was before our time.
He burst into our screens in a hazy, balmy colour in 1970 as television really did seem to have a purpose for a change and for all of us who watched this footage years later it's as if Pele the Legend was within touching distance.
Not a frenetic player by any means, his skill was thoughtful, intelligent and measured. This, of course in the days before natural skill was over analysed, picked and patronising fawned over.
From his exploits in the New York Cosmos to his appearance in 'Escape to Victory', he maintained a profile but he never became a caricature he still remained 'Pele'.
RIP
