Doubt there's too many Oi lovers round these parts but, for what it's worth, all six albums are getting a rerelease from Cherry Red in September 2020.... A long awaited 6 CD clam shell box covering the first six volumes in the seminal Oi! Compilation series which features 68 artists across 121 tracks.Initially launched in 1980 by ‘Sounds’ journalist Garry Bushell, “Oi! The Album” contained tracks from the likes of Cockney Rejects, Angelic Upstarts, The Exploited, The 4 Skins, Cock Sparrer, Slaughter & The Dogs and Peter & The Test Tube Babies.
1981’s “Strength Thru Oi!” featured the likes of Toy Dolls, Infa Riot, Cock Sparrer, Last Resort and ‘newer’ bands like The Strike and Criminal Class as well as the Oi! poet Garry Johnson.“Carry On Oi!!” hit No.4 in the Independent Chart and ‘introduced’ the likes of The Business, The Partisans, Blitz, Red Alert and The Ejected alongside ‘veterans’ such as The 4 Skins and Infa Riot.
Disc 4 is 1982’s “Oi! Oi! That’s Yer Lot”. Reggae legend Judge Dread along with ‘one man Chas ‘N’ Dave’ Frankie Flame and established Oi! acts such as The Business and The Oppressed. Added to the disc are five tracks originally recorded at the session for the LP but later released on the ‘Back On The Streets’ EP.
“Son Of Oi!” is what you will find on Disc 5. An Indie Chart No.11, it featured stalwarts like The 4 Skins, Angelic Upstarts, Cock Sparrer, The Business and The Gonads as well as introducing ‘newer’ acts such as Vicious Rumours, Prole and Maniac Youth.
The final disc is 1984’s “Oi! Of Sex” which reached No.11 in the Indie Chart. Again a mixture of the established – Cock Sparrer, Gonads – and the new – The Burial, ABH and Rat Patrol.

Not for me thanks. Strength Through Oi features that sad sack Nicky Crane on the cover. Once a British Movement neo nazi, later a gay scene cruiser who would succumb to an AIDS related illness. Nick the Nazi is a Panzi ran the Sun headline at the time.

On the contrary.I've always liked a bit of oi.The clue's in my name on here i guess.I know it's got a bad rep,and there are probably one too many right wing bands in the scene but there are also a ton of bands who have nothing to do with the right wing neanderthals.Back at the end of the 70's when punk was splitting up in different directions,Post Punk/Anarcho/Hardcore etc Oi was the way to go for me.I've always liked a rocking sound with a good tune and Oi with it's anthemic choruses ticked the box.

That Sun headline is rubbish. If the words rhymned it might work
I'm not attracted to the genre but have - in the last 3/4 years - discovered the joy of Oi parody band Hard Skin

The Cockney Rejects were punk, IMO the last British act of the genre. 'Oi' was a label made up by the press after they came along.

Glassing an innocent black family at a bus stop and running amok in Brick Lane attacking the Asian community. Red Action sent him to the hospital on more than one occassion. There some right dodgy songs on it too from the Last Resort about killing'queers'(Johnny Bardon) Shame on Cherry Red for promoting this pish.

I might add that not all the bands on these albums were nazi's and the Test Tubes, Partisan's etc went on to release some brilliant records. A lot of them weren't stupid but I've always distrusted all those bands that played that infamous Southall gig and always will.

Oi! smacked of empire building on the part of Garry Bushell to me. He went from writing for the Socialist Worker to the Sun. I remember him 'pronouncing' when Punk was dead... like he was some kind of prophet... his opinions never meant f**k all to me.
There were some good bands that got tagged/tarnished with Oi... but my memory of it at the time, was just gangs of thugs turning up at Punk gigs, to pick on someone who was out numbered, like a bunch of cowards and bullies in Dr Martens.

Completely Andy.
Bushell never meant anything to me either.
The whole Oi thing brought a lot of violence and right wingers into punk whereas punks were at the forefront at fighting racism to begin with.

Sham 69 must also share some of the blame for the skinhead revival and associated racist attitudes. They could/should have been a lot more unequivocal about where they stood.
Same for a lot of the Oi bands too. Many seemed to want to have their cake and eat it

There was a bloke in Scarborough who pestered me on a few occasions to put Bushell's band The Gonads on. Ho fucking ho.

About a week ago me and some friends watched the Documentary " East End Babylon" about The Cockney Rejects. I am not particularly a fan of there's... like a couple of songs... can't stand others... but it's a very well made film, that goes into alot of detail about the history of the East End of London. Well worth seeing no matter what you think of their music.
