Having watched the dramatisation about Jimmy Savile, i wasn't sure i wanted to watch yet another 'True Life Saga' about the darker side of 1970's British Criminal History... but a friend has been bugging me to watch this, so i thought i'd check it out and watched it all over 3 days. I was only 12 years old when Peter Sutcliffe began his series of lethal attacks on women. Too young to fully understand the real horror of what was happening. But as the years rolled on and it became front page news and getting constant attention on TV, the truth began to sink in. But i didn't know much in the way of chronological detail. So this very well researched series puts the pieces of the giant jigsaw together and captures the mood of the time. How early opportunities to catch Sutcliffe were missed and squandered, how the bogus tape the Police received, sent the enquiry off down the wrong track for far too long. How the relentless pressure took it's toll on the people heading The Biggest Manhunt In British History. There are powerful scenes devoted to showing the traumatic effect on the families long after these atrocities were committed too.

There was a brilliant documentary about the Ripper on iPlayer a few years back. Not sure I need another retelling but this does sound good Andy. Thanks for the info.
You're spot on about the mistakes made by the Yorkshire Police
The Red Riding Quartet by David Peace is another brilliant piece of Ripper inspired culture

I've still got dozens of clippings from when he was at large and the capture and trial.
Have read most books on the case. One book I'd recommend is Somebody's Husband Somebody's Son which delves into his family in depth and contains info that"s rarely reported.
One thing I've noticed from the ITV series is that they've completely changed the name of one of the victims. Obviously some privacy issue has arisen there.

I guess if you have read books about the case, then this dramatisation doesn't tell you anything new. But i haven't... but there is a lengthy Wikipedia page about Peter Sutcliffe and his broken childhood.
I didn't know he died from the Coronavirus
