I was age 9 in 1971 and can still remember old money and can still convert from one to the other
All the school kids were given one of these in the run up... Note the half pence For years afterwards old relatives would moan about how confusing it was and how the shopkeepers had sneakily put their prices up after decimalisation Anyone else remember this landmark event - 15 Feb 1971 triv fans

Oh, Yes. I was in the last year of Junior School and I had just got a grip on how to work out my pocket money then the bastards came and did this to us, what was wrong with working in units of 12 anyway? Mars Bars sneaked up by a old halfpenny to round up to 2 new pence.
Got a load of vinyl Trojan compilations in the other day emblazoned with twelve shilling and sixpence stickers, 62 and half pence in new money. Waiting for some bore to come in and query why they're in the racks for a tenner plus.
The metric system was never enforced for weights and measures though.

I was four at the time it happened, and hence don't remember pre-decimal currency (though I recall that the old half-shilling coins were still in circulation, and had a value of 2½ new pence).

I imagine those coins were spent by virtually all kids of the era within a few days
18 and a half pence bought a of flying saucers, love hearts, and shrimps

It happened in Australia when I was five years old. I remember being pissed off about it because lollies that were two for a penny were now two for a cent, but there were twelve pennies in a shilling and only ten cents in the equivalent decimal coin. I also remember they published the likenesses of the new banknotes in some magazines and some clever characters cut them out and took them up the shops and spent them.
Here is one of the many advertisements thay used to advertise the change

I certainly remember the old pennies and tanners in the house after Decimalisation.
Also ten bob notes too.
Funny how money is much smaller too now.
The old pennies were like Wagon Wheels.🙂
