OK, so I know if I visit websites for records or any other consumer item, I will get bombarded in my news feed with adverts for similar items from similar companies.
However, how does this one work? On Saturday I went into Iceland to buy a few bits. I very rarely visit this store and in there I paid by cash not card. Since then my news feed and Facebook page has had almost a dozen adverts for Iceland Christmas offers. My phone would have been active whilst I was in the store. Ideas?

They didn't ask you to do an "on line" receipt, quite a few stores do now.

No Doug, I paid cash. My mate reckons it is because I have my phone GPS switched on. Certain shops have a wi fi tracking system and know what IP address units have been in their stores.

Yeah I've heard of this kind of thing.
Even targeted ads when you enter the correct part of a city or town centre. Just creepy but gradually they can get us used to anything.

Need some kind of proper legislation against this constant tracking.

If you’ve got a smartphone and you walk into a business it has the same effect as talking about buying/needing a certain product near your phone and you’ll get targeted ads that way.

Does that business need specially installed hardware to detect my phone or is it Google (or other third party platform) picking up on my GPS location and targetting me? These ads come up on my Facebook and Google pages but not Duck Duck Go.

These ads come up on my Facebook and Google pages but not Duck Duck Go. It’s not the store tracking you it’s the proximity of your phone to businesses. A funny story occurred because of this, my friend left somebody’s house and they had a Google phone and they got asked to rate “Sexy Sandra’s Escort Service”. As I was told; the neighbouring house was occupied by Sandra, lol!
