A local wine bar refused cash when I went to order some drinks, only credit cards they said. That was already a few years ago. They later reversed the policy. It happened to me again a few months ago in Sydney at the main railway station when I tried to buy a coffee and a sandwich. I had to go unrefreshed at the time. But it turns out it is illegal to refuse cash. A recent case that actually occurred in Parliament House in Canberra may help to end this practice,
What's happening in the UK?

So far as I know cash is accepted in most places though rare to see people using it. Contactless has changed the game. Even some beggars use their phones as card readers

Maybe Australia has different laws but it is not illegal to refuse cash in the UK. The retail/hospitality establishment has complete autonomy on how it wants payment. I accept both card and cash in my shop and I often offer discounts on sales over £20 if they are paying by cash, never if paying by card.

A lot of festivals now are completely cashless.
At Boomtown last year even the drug dealers had card readers

Cheques are being made redundant in Australia this year. I rarely write them, but I receive several each year. It will create some difficulties.

Discounts for cash is still common in Australia, but my bastard telco provider charges me extra if I pay my bills in cash

We did have a kick back here when some banks wanted to do away with cheques, still valid. My Dad is incredibly old school and went to renew his roadside assistance policy with a cheque, the car broke down and he phoned the AA only to be told he was no longer covered. They never informed him that they no longer took cheques and just binned his payment. I had to do it by debit card whilst he was stuck in a layby for five hours.
