Use to listen to Radio 1 at work in the eighties and Wright's afternoon show was always a guilty pleasure. Not so much the anodyne music he played but the characters (played by Wright and his team) who would pop up and discuss topics of the day. Probably completely un PC now but Mr Angry, Damien the Social Worker, Hairdresser Gervais etc., gave a laugh whilst watching the clock. news.sky.com/story/steve-wright-bbc-radio-presenter-has-died-13070797

RIP Steve.
I always recorded his Pick of the Pops show to put on my MP3 player if it was a year I was interested in and he always gave informative comments on the records a lot of it I was unaware of.

Daytime radio was awful in the 80's, and although the music he played wasn't any different, his characters and comedy raised him above the 'Smashey and Nicey' culture.
I think I'm right in saying that the first record he played on his R1 debut show was Pink Floyd's Brick in the Wall. I would have been about 15 and was in our garage at home when he made his debut on a Saturday evening.
